想像以上に大きくなる？色彩豊かなクラゲ
A Surprisingly Large and Colorful Jellyfish
傘径30cm前後、最大で40cmに達する大型のクラゲで、オーストラリア東部・北部からフィリピン、マレー半島周辺の沿岸域に広く分布します。丸みを帯びた傘をリズミカルに強く脈動させながら遊泳する姿が特徴で、一般的なクラゲの漂うような動きとは異なり、比較的能動的に移動します。近年はウミガメやマグロ、マンボウといった捕食者の減少や海洋環境の変化の影響を受け、個体数は増加傾向にあると考えられています。なお、日本の水族館等で見られる個体は傘径10cm前後のものが多いものの、これらは成長途中である場合が多く、本来はさらに大型化します。
体色は青、白、褐色など変化に富み、同一種とは思えないほどの多様性を示します。この色彩は体内に共生する褐虫藻に由来し、その種類や生息環境の違いによって発色が変わるとされています。観賞性の高さから水族館で展示される機会も多い一方で、飼育下では環境条件の再現が難しく、長期飼育や繁殖は容易ではありません。なお、「カラージェリーフィッシュ」は日本における通称で、標準和名はナキツラクラゲ、英名はJelly blubberと呼ばれます。
本種は一般的なクラゲに見られる長い触手を持たず、代わりに太く分岐した口腕が発達している点が特徴です。これらの口腕には刺胞が備わり、小型のプランクトンなどを捕らえる役割を果たしますが、人に対する毒性は比較的弱く、刺されても軽い痛みやかゆみ程度にとどまることが多いとされています。ただし個人差があり、場合によっては強い反応が出ることもあるため、不用意に触れることは避けるべきです。このような形態は根口クラゲ類に共通するもので、本種もその典型的な特徴を示しています。
A large jellyfish with a bell diameter of around 30 cm, reaching up to 40 cm at maximum. It is widely distributed in coastal waters from eastern and northern Australia to the Philippines and the Malay Peninsula. Unlike many jellyfish that drift passively, this species actively swims by rhythmically pulsating its rounded bell at a relatively fast pace. In recent years, its population is thought to be increasing, possibly due to declines in predators such as sea turtles, tuna, and ocean sunfish, as well as changes in marine environments. Individuals kept in aquariums in Japan are often around 10 cm in diameter, but these are usually still growing and can become much larger under suitable conditions.
Its coloration varies greatly, including blue, white, and brown forms, sometimes appearing as if they were different species. These colors are derived from symbiotic zooxanthellae living within its body, and differences in their types and habitats are believed to influence the variation in coloration. Due to its visual appeal, it is frequently displayed in aquariums; however, long-term maintenance and breeding are considered difficult because of the challenges in replicating its natural environment. The name “Color jellyfish” is a common name used in Japan; its standard Japanese name is Nakitsura-kurage, and it is commonly referred to in English as the blubber jellyfish.
This species lacks the long trailing tentacles typical of many jellyfish and instead possesses numerous thick, branching oral arms. These structures are equipped with stinging cells used to capture small plankton. Its venom is relatively mild to humans, usually causing only slight pain or irritation, although reactions can vary among individuals. As a member of the order Rhizostomeae, it exhibits the characteristic morphology of this group.
