シロフクロウ（Snowy Owl）は全長50～60cm、翼開長140～165cmに達する大型のフクロウです。北極圏のツンドラ地帯に広く分布し、繁殖期は一年の大半を氷と雪に覆われた厳しい環境で過ごします。冬になると多くの個体が南下し、ユーラシア大陸や北アメリカ大陸の亜寒帯や温帯北部で越冬します。日本では主に北海道で記録されるほか、まれに本州でも観察されることがあります。

樹木の少ないツンドラでは、他のフクロウ類のように森の木々を利用することができません。そのため、シロフクロウは岩の上や小高い土盛り、流木、人工物など見晴らしの良い場所にとまり、周囲を警戒しながら獲物を探します。主食はレミングをはじめとする小型哺乳類で、個体数はレミングの増減に大きく左右されます。獲物が豊富な年には繁殖成績が向上し、多くの雛を育てることができます。

シロフクロウの特徴といえば、雪原を思わせる美しい白い羽毛です。しかし若い個体やメスでは黒褐色の斑紋が目立ち、オスも若いうちは同様の模様を持っています。オスは成長するにつれて斑紋が減少し、高齢になるほど純白に近い姿になります。一方、メスは成鳥になってもある程度の斑紋を残すことが一般的です。こうした模様は、巣の周辺で身を隠す際の保護色として役立っていると考えられています。

動物園では、白い羽毛が日光を強く反射するためか、目を細めている姿がよく見られます。その表情はまるで微笑んでいるようにも見えますが、北極圏の厳しい自然を生き抜く優れた狩人の一面を持つ鳥でもあります。

The Snowy Owl is a large owl, measuring 50–60 cm in length with a wingspan of 140–165 cm. It is widely distributed across the Arctic tundra, where it spends much of the year in a harsh environment dominated by ice and snow. During winter, many individuals migrate southward to subarctic and northern temperate regions of Eurasia and North America. In Japan, the species is recorded mainly in Hokkaido, though it is occasionally observed on Honshu as well.

Unlike many other owls that inhabit forests, the Snowy Owl lives in the treeless tundra. As a result, it often perches on rocks, low mounds, driftwood, or other elevated vantage points that provide a clear view of the surrounding landscape. From these lookout posts, it searches for prey while remaining alert to its surroundings. Its diet consists primarily of small mammals, especially lemmings, and its population size is closely tied to fluctuations in lemming numbers. In years when prey is abundant, breeding success improves and pairs may raise large broods of chicks.

The Snowy Owl is best known for its striking white plumage, which blends beautifully with the snowy Arctic landscape. However, females and young birds display prominent dark brown barring and spots, and young males also possess similar markings. As males mature, these markings gradually diminish, and older individuals may become almost entirely white. Females, by contrast, usually retain some degree of barring throughout their lives. These markings are thought to provide camouflage, helping birds remain concealed around the nest.

In zoos, Snowy Owls are often seen squinting, perhaps because their white plumage reflects bright sunlight. Their expression can appear almost as if they are smiling, yet beneath that gentle appearance lies a skilled predator perfectly adapted to survive in the demanding environment of the Arctic.
