Chaetodon wiebeli (Kaup, 1863)
A Full Moon Beneath the Sea
Reaching about 18 cm in length, the Hong-Kong butterflyfish is distributed mainly along the coasts of southern China and Taiwan, centered around Hong Kong. It inhabits rocky reefs with scattered corals at depths of 4–25 meters. Its diet consists of algae growing on rocks, coral polyps, and small benthic invertebrates. It is most often seen in pairs or small groups.
This species closely resembles the Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auripes), but can be distinguished by the oblique black bands on its body, the broader dark band at the base of the tail, and the large black spot on the top of its head. It also overlaps in range with the Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula), and occasional natural hybrids displaying characteristics of both species have been recorded.
The Japanese name Tsuki-chōchōuo (“Moon Butterflyfish”) is thought to derive from the large, round black spot on the top of its head, while its English name, Hong-Kong butterflyfish, reflects the region where it is most commonly found. Interestingly, several butterflyfishes, including the Raccoon Butterflyfish and the Onespot Butterflyfish, also bear scientific or English names associated with the moon.
Although its bright yellow coloration may appear conspicuous, it blends surprisingly well into coral reefs, where yellow corals, sponges, and shafts of sunlight create a similarly colored background. Combined with its bold black markings, which help break up the outline of its body, this coloration provides effective camouflage. Drifting quietly through the reef, it evokes the image of a full moon suspended beneath the sea.
