Chaetodon ulietensis (G. Cuvier, 1831)
The Swaying Screen Pattern of the Sea
The Pacific Double-saddle Butterflyfish reaches about 18 cm in length. It inhabits rocky and coral reefs across the western and central Pacific Ocean and can be found in Japan south of Sagami Bay. The rear half of its body is bright yellow, while three black vertical bands cross the front half. These bands resemble a traditional bamboo screen, or sudare, giving rise to its Japanese name. Adults are often found in pairs and feed on algae, zooplankton, and small bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
The genus Chaetodon, which belongs to the butterflyfish family, is a large group comprising around ninety species. Most are characterized by striking patterns based on yellow, white, and black coloration. The Pacific Double-saddle Butterflyfish is a typical member of this group and bears a strong resemblance to species such as the Saddleback Butterflyfish and the Philippine Butterflyfish. Compared with many of its relatives, however, it is considered relatively hardy and easier to maintain in captivity.
Why are butterflyfishes so brightly colored? At first glance, such vivid patterns seem likely to attract the attention of predators. Yet the coral reefs they inhabit are among the most colorful environments in the ocean. Corals, sponges, algae, and countless other organisms create a complex mosaic of colors and shapes. In such surroundings, bold markings may actually help break up a fish’s outline and allow it to blend into the background. These patterns may also serve as visual signals for recognizing members of the same species.
Colorful butterflyfishes are among the iconic inhabitants of tropical seas. The elegant striped pattern of the Pacific Double-saddle Butterflyfish appears brilliant and eye-catching to human observers, but for the fish itself it is an important adaptation that helps it survive in the vibrant world of the coral reef.
