Hypsypops rubicundus (Girard, 1854)

英雄の名を継ぐケルプ森の魚
The fish that inherits the name of a hero

体長35cm。カリフォルニア州モントレー湾から、バハカリフォルニア南部にかけて東太平洋の沿岸部に分布します。岩礁域やケルプと呼ばれる大型の海藻の森に生息するスズメダイの一種です。カリフォルニア州では州魚として法律で保護されており、採取や飼育は違法となります。明るい橙色の体色とハート型の尾びれが特徴的で、暗いケルプの森の中では一際鮮やかで目立ちます。幼魚は濃い橙色で青い斑点と青い縁取りのヒレがあります。

繁殖ですが、卵を育てるのはオスの役目です。毎年春になると巣となる岩場の藻やゴミを取り除いたりして巣作りの準備に取り組みます。そして準備が整うと今度はメスは良い巣を見つけるためにオスの作った巣を見てまわります。決めるまでに15以上の巣を尋ねることも珍しくないそうです。オスはメスの注意を引くためにループ状に泳ぎます。そして咽頭歯を噛みしめて低周波のドンドンという音を出します。オスは懸命なアピールによって初めてメスを巣に迎え入れることができるのです。ちなみにメスは空の巣に卵を産むことを嫌がり、最低でも１匹の別のメスの卵がある巣を探すそうです。無事に受精した卵を守るためにオスは侵入者を寄せ付けず勇敢に立ち向かいます。

さて、ガリバルディの名前はイタリア統一のために戦った英雄ジュゼッペ・ガリバルディが由来です。彼は1840年代に組織した軍の士気を上げるために鮮やかな赤いシャツを着ることにしたのでした。赤を纏う勇猛な姿がイタリアの英雄になぞらえられたというわけです。

It grows to 35 cm in length and lives along the eastern Pacific coast from Monterey Bay to southern Baja California. It’s a species of damselfish that inhabits rocky reefs and kelp forests. It’s protected by law as the state fish of California, and collecting or keeping it in captivity is illegal. Its distinctive bright orange body and heart-shaped tail fin stand out against the dark kelp forest. Juveniles are a deep orange with blue spots and blue-edged fins.

During the breeding season, males are responsible for raising the eggs. Each spring, males prepare the nest by clearing algae and debris from the rocky nesting area. Once ready, females thoroughly search the nests built by males, searching for a suitable site. It’s not uncommon for them to cycle through more than 15 nests before deciding on one. Males swim in circles to attract females’ attention. They also produce low-frequency thumping sounds by clenching their pharyngeal teeth. Only by making a strong appeal can a male lure a female into the nest. Incidentally, females are hesitant to lay their eggs in an empty nest, and instead search for one that contains at least one other female’s eggs. To protect their successfully fertilized eggs, males bravely stand guard and keep intruders at bay.

The name “Garibaldi” comes from Giuseppe Garibaldi, a hero who fought for Italian unification. To boost morale in the army he organized in the 1840s, he decided to wear bright red shirts. This fish, dressed in red, was likened to the image of an Italian hero.
