Chromis viridis (G. Cuvier, 1830)

The Blue-green Jewel of the Coral Reef

Reaching about 8 cm in length, the Blue-green Chromis is distributed throughout the western Pacific, from south of Amami Ōshima. Its Japanese name comes from the forward-projecting canine-like teeth on the lower jaw. It inhabits branching coral reefs, where it forms large schools. Feeding on zooplankton while hovering above the reef, it creates one of the most iconic scenes of tropical coral reefs. In clear water, hundreds of individuals may gather, their shimmering blue-green bodies appearing to paint the reef with color. Owing to its brilliant appearance and peaceful nature, it has long been one of the most popular marine aquarium fishes.

Its most distinctive feature is its vivid blue-green coloration. Both the English name, Blue-green Chromis, and the specific epithet viridis, meaning “green” in Latin, are derived from this striking color. Surprisingly, however, the fish’s coloration is not produced simply by blue or green pigments. Instead, it results from structural coloration created by specialized skin cells. Yellow-reflecting iridophores and black melanophores are overlaid by motile iridophores that reflect mainly blue light. Because these iridophores change their reflective properties depending on the angle of incoming light, their interaction with the underlying yellow cells produces a pointillistic optical effect, giving the fish hues that range from pale blue to peppermint green. When an entire school swims together, the fish sparkle like countless jewels suspended in the sea.

During the breeding season, males become even more colorful. Their bodies develop a stronger yellow tint, while the dorsal and pectoral fins darken, forming a conspicuous nuptial coloration used to attract females. Around Okinawa, spawning usually occurs in June. Males gather on coral rubble areas near the reef, where they clean and defend a chosen spawning site. They repeatedly court passing females with quivering displays, encouraging them to lay their eggs. After spawning, the male remains to guard the eggs until they hatch, fanning them continuously with his pectoral fins to provide a fresh supply of oxygen-rich seawater. Behind its delicate beauty lies a devoted parent that invests remarkable effort in ensuring the survival of the next generation.
