Chromis fieldi (Randall & DiBattista, 2013)

A Damselfish Described as a New Species in 2013

Reaching about 7 cm in length, this damselfish inhabits the shallow lagoons and coral reefs of the western Indian Ocean, including the Maldives, the Chagos Archipelago, and the East African coast. It is commonly found from just a few meters below the surface to depths of around 30 meters, where it lives among branching corals and rocky crevices. An omnivorous species, it feeds mainly on zooplankton, along with small crustaceans and algae. Usually seen alone or in small groups, it quickly retreats into coral shelters when threatened. Its peaceful temperament and striking coloration have also made it a popular marine aquarium fish.

Its most distinctive feature is its striking two-tone coloration, with the front half of the body dark brown to black and the rear half white. The pattern resembles a fish dipped halfway into melted chocolate, giving rise to the common name “Chocolatedip Chromis.” Although this bold coloration makes the fish highly conspicuous on coral reefs, its ecological or evolutionary function has not yet been fully understood.

The species has two remarkably similar relatives: Chromis margaritifer from the western Pacific and Chromis dimidiata, which is endemic to the Red Sea. All three share the same black-and-white pattern and can be difficult to distinguish underwater. However, in C. fieldi, the boundary between the dark and white regions lies farther back on the body and is gently curved with a diffuse margin, whereas in the other two species it lies near the middle of the body and forms a straight, sharply defined line. In addition, differences in the number of pectoral-fin rays and pored lateral-line scales provide important diagnostic characters separating C. fieldi from C. dimidiata.

For many years, this fish was regarded as the same species as the Red Sea endemic C. dimidiata. However, re-examination of its morphology and genetic characteristics demonstrated that the Indian Ocean population represents a distinct species, Chromis fieldi. Most specimens in the aquarium trade originate from the Maldives, where the species is collected for export. Chromis fieldi was formally described as a new species in 2013.
