Genicanthus lamarck (Lacepède, 1802)

体長20cmほど。インド洋から西太平洋にかけての熱帯・亜熱帯海域に分布し、日本では八丈島以南で見られるキンチャクダイの仲間です。サンゴ礁や岩礁域の外縁部を中心に生息し、動物プランクトンや付着生物などを餌としています。

体は白色を基調とし、黒い4～6本の縦帯が入ることが特徴です。雌雄で体色に違いがあり、メスは尾鰭の上下に黒線があり腹鰭が白色ですが、オスでは尾鰭の黒線が消失し、腹鰭が黒くなります。さらにオスは額に黄色い斑紋が現れ、眼の後方の縦帯が青みを帯びるため、成熟した個体は容易に見分けることができます。

本種は他の多くのキンチャクダイ科魚類と同様に雌性先熟の雌雄同体で、メスからオスへ性転換します。自然下では1匹または複数の大型オスを中心としたハーレムを形成し、群れのオスがいなくなると、その中で優位なメスが性転換して新たなオスとなります。この仕組みによって繁殖集団が維持されています。

名前がよく似たタテジマキンチャクダイとは別種で、本種はサザナミヤッコ属 (Genicanthus) に分類されます。種小名 lamarckii はフランスの博物学者ジャン＝バティスト・ラマルクに由来すると考えられており、英名にもその名が残されています。ラマルクはダーウィン以前に進化についての体系的な学説を提唱した人物として知られ、「用不用説」で広く知られています。白と黒の端正な縞模様だけでなく、性転換を伴う社会構造や科学史とのつながりも、本種の大きな魅力です。

Reaching about 20 cm in length, the Lamarck’s Angelfish is a member of the angelfish family distributed from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. In Japan, it is found south of Hachijojima Island. It inhabits the outer slopes of coral reefs and rocky reefs, feeding mainly on zooplankton and encrusting organisms.

The species is characterized by its white body marked with four to six black vertical stripes. Males and females differ in appearance: females have black lines along the upper and lower edges of the tail fin and white pelvic fins, whereas males lack these tail markings and have black pelvic fins. Mature males also develop a yellow marking on the forehead and a bluish coloration behind the eye, making them easily distinguishable.

Like many other angelfishes, this species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, changing sex from female to male. Individuals form harems centered around one or more large males, and when the dominant male disappears, the most dominant female changes sex and becomes the new male. This mechanism allows the reproductive group to continue functioning.

Despite its similar Japanese name, it is a different species from the Koran Angelfish and belongs to the genus Genicanthus. The specific name lamarckii is believed to honor the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, whose name is also reflected in the English common name. Lamarck proposed an early evolutionary theory before Darwin and is well known for the concept of “use and disuse.” In addition to its elegant black-and-white pattern, its social system involving sex change and its connection to the history of science make this species especially fascinating.
