The Northward Journey of a Damselfish
The Pearl Spot Chromis reaches about 14 cm in length and belongs to the damselfish family (Pomacentridae). It is widely distributed along the coasts of East Asia, including the Korean Peninsula and China. In Japan, it occurs from Akita Prefecture southward but is absent from the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands. It inhabits shallow coastal waters, particularly rocky reefs and breakwaters, and is known as the northernmost-distributed member of the damselfish family. While most damselfishes are associated with tropical and subtropical seas, this species is unusually tolerant of cold conditions and can survive in water temperatures as low as 8°C.
Its body coloration ranges from dark brown to nearly black, giving adults a subdued appearance. One of its most distinctive features is the gently curved dorsal fin, whose soft-rayed posterior portion extends upward toward the rear, creating an elegant profile when viewed from the side. Juveniles often form schools around rocky reefs and seaweed beds, whereas adults tend to live alone or in small groups.
The Japanese name Suzumedai (literally “sparrow sea bream”) is thought to derive from its sparrow-like coloration and a body shape that resembles that of sea breams. The damselfish family also includes clownfishes and many brilliantly colored reef species that are popular in the aquarium trade. In contrast, the Pearl Spot Chromis has a modest brown coloration and stands out as an unusual temperate-water representative of a predominantly tropical family.
Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have significantly revised the classification of damselfishes, which are now recognized as a diverse group comprising more than 400 species. Among them, the Pearl Spot Chromis has attracted attention because it is one of the few species that has successfully expanded into colder waters. Recent research has shown that although it can survive at temperatures as low as 8°C, exposure to such conditions increases oxidative stress and suppresses aspects of its immune function. Reports of northward range expansion associated with changing sea temperatures have further highlighted its importance as a model for understanding how tropical-origin fishes adapt to temperate environments and expand their geographic distributions.
