Zonosaurus quadrilineatus (Grandidier, 1867)
A Girdled Lizard That Survived a Journey Across the Sea
Reaching 30–40 cm in total length, the Four-lined Girdled Lizard is a member of the family Gerrhosauridae native to the arid regions of southwestern Madagascar. Its distribution is relatively restricted, occurring mainly between the Mangoky and Onilahy rivers, where it inhabits dry forests, scrublands, rocky areas, and Madagascar’s distinctive spiny forests. The genus Zonosaurus is one of Madagascar’s representative reptile groups, and this species is considered among the larger members of the genus.
The species is named for the four pale longitudinal stripes running along its back. The hard, plate-like scales covering the body from head to tail not only provide armor-like protection but also create a remarkable pattern through the contrasting arrangement of blackish-brown and white scales. Viewed closely, these markings resemble a mosaic or even pixel art. Such intricate coloration blends effectively with leaf litter and dappled shade, providing excellent camouflage in its dry forest habitat.
Primarily terrestrial and active during the day, this lizard feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, while also consuming fruits, flowers, and tender plant material. When threatened, it quickly retreats into vegetation or beneath fallen logs, relying on its camouflage to avoid detection. Unlike many girdled lizards that depend heavily on rock crevices, this species actively forages across the ground and is well adapted to life in arid environments.
The ancestors of the zonosaurs are thought to have reached Madagascar from mainland Africa by crossing the sea around 30 million years ago, later diversifying into numerous species across the island. The Four-lined Girdled Lizard is one of the descendants of this remarkable lineage, surviving through time while evolving its own distinctive coloration and way of life.
