Playing Dead? The Palette Surgeonfish’s Defensive Trick

The palette surgeonfish is a member of the surgeonfish family (Acanthuridae) found in coral reef habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific. Adults are about 20 cm (8 in) long and can reach up to 31 cm (12 in). Its vivid blue body, black markings, and yellow tail make it instantly recognizable, while its relatively high-set eyes are another distinctive feature. Because of its striking appearance, it is also popular in the aquarium trade. Juveniles look very different from adults, being bright yellow all over. As they grow, their coloration gradually changes from yellow to blue, while the black markings and yellow tail develop to produce the characteristic adult pattern.

In coral reefs, palette surgeonfish swim through well-flushed areas, feeding mainly on zooplankton but also consuming algae. When threatened, however, they quickly retreat into crevices among corals and rocks. They are also known for another unusual behavior. When discovered by a predator, they may turn onto their side and remain motionless. This behavior, which makes the fish appear dead, is thought to help them evade an attack. For a fish whose vivid coloration makes it conspicuous, suddenly becoming completely motionless is an unexpected aspect of its life on the reef.

Despite its seemingly gentle and timid nature, the palette surgeonfish is equipped with an effective means of defense. At the base of the tail, on the caudal peduncle, are a pair of sharp, retractable spines. These spines are associated with venom glands and can be used to injure an opponent when the fish feels threatened or during conflicts with other individuals. A sting can be painful, so care is required when handling this species in captivity. Behind its vivid appearance and seemingly timid behavior lies a sharp weapon that helps this fish survive on the reef.
