眼状斑を持つ大型肉食シクリッド
A Large Carnivorous Cichlid with an Eyespot

アマゾン川水系全域に広く分布し、とくに中～下流域の水草や倒木が豊富な湿地帯に多く見られる大型シクリッドで、最大で体長70cmに達します。肉食性で小魚や甲殻類を捕食する大食漢として知られ、成長速度も非常に速い種です。体色や斑紋には個体差があり、尾柄部に見られる眼状斑（アイスポット）が特徴的で、これが和名や流通名の由来にもなっています。成熟したオスでは頭部が盛り上がる「コブ」が発達することもあり、外見的な迫力をいっそう強めます。

本種はその強い引きと俊敏な動きから、南米ではもちろん、移入先であるハワイやグアム、東南アジアなどでもスポーツフィッシングの対象魚として高い人気を誇り、「ピーコックバス」あるいはブラジルでの呼称「トゥクナレ」の名で広く知られています。一方で観賞魚としての需要もあり、アクアリウム分野では「アイスポットシクリッド」の名で流通しています。

なお、日本では同じ外来魚として知られるブラックバス類が特定外来生物に指定され、原則として飼育が規制されているのに対し、本種は現時点で同様の規制対象ではなく、一般的な手続きのもとで飼育が可能です。ただし大型化と強い捕食性を持つことから、飼育には十分なスペースと設備、適切な管理が求められます。

Widely distributed throughout the Amazon River basin, this large cichlid is especially common in vegetated wetlands and areas with submerged wood in the middle to lower reaches of the river. It can grow up to 70 cm in length. A carnivorous species, it is known as a voracious predator that feeds on small fish and crustaceans, and it exhibits a remarkably fast growth rate. Body coloration and pattern vary among individuals, but a distinctive eyespot (ocellus) on the caudal peduncle is a key feature, giving rise to its common and trade names. Mature males may develop a pronounced nuchal hump on the head, adding to their imposing appearance.

Renowned for its powerful strikes and agile movements, this species is highly prized as a sport fish not only in South America but also in introduced regions such as Hawaii, Guam, and Southeast Asia. It is widely known as the “peacock bass” or by its Brazilian name, “tucunaré.” At the same time, it is also popular in the aquarium trade, where it is sold under the name “eyespot cichlid.”

Due to its large adult size and strong predatory nature, successful captive care requires ample space, robust equipment, and responsible management.
