体長55〜70cm、翼開長約180cm、体重2〜3kg。ダルマワシはサハラ砂漠以南のアフリカに広く分布する中型のワシです。日中の大半を飛行しながら過ごすことで知られ、上昇気流を利用して長時間滑空します。低空を広範囲に飛び回り、1日に300km以上移動することもあるとされます。獲物はネズミなどの小型哺乳類、小鳥、ヘビやトカゲなどの爬虫類のほか、昆虫や動物の死骸まで幅広く利用します。

和名の「ダルマワシ」は、ずんぐりとした体形と赤い顔が達磨を連想させることに由来します。一方、英名の「Bateleur」はフランス語で「綱渡り師」を意味し、左右に翼を傾けながら巧みにバランスを取り、高速で滑空する姿から名付けられました。飛翔時には白い翼の内側と黒い体色の対比がよく目立ち、極端に短い尾羽も本種を見分ける大きな特徴です。動物園では止まり木にとまる姿を見る機会が多いものの、本来の魅力は広大な空を自在に飛び回る飛翔能力にあります。

繁殖期には大木の上に巣を作り、通常は1個の卵を産みます。成長も比較的ゆっくりで、つがいは広い行動圏を維持しながら子育てを行います。そのため、生息地の開発や送電線との衝突などの影響を受けやすい鳥としても知られています。

ダルマワシはアフリカ各地で親しまれている鳥で、ジンバブエ共和国の国章にも関わりがあると考えられています。国章に描かれている「ジンバブエ鳥」は、世界遺産グレート・ジンバブエ遺跡から発見された石彫で、王権や祖先を象徴する存在です。その正体については諸説ありますが、有力な候補の一つがダルマワシとされています。広大なアフリカの空を悠然と舞う姿は、古代王国の象徴としてふさわしい風格を感じさせます。

The bateleur is a medium-sized eagle found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Adults measure 55–70 cm in length, have a wingspan of about 180 cm, and weigh 2–3 kg. Renowned for spending most of the day in flight, this species uses rising air currents to soar effortlessly over vast distances. Flying low over the landscape, it may cover more than 300 km in a single day. Its diet is highly varied and includes small mammals such as rodents, birds, reptiles such as snakes and lizards, insects, and even carrion.

The Japanese name Daruma-washi (“Daruma Eagle”) refers to its compact body shape and bright red face, which resemble a traditional Daruma doll. Its English name, Bateleur, comes from a French word meaning “tightrope walker” or “acrobat,” inspired by the bird’s habit of rocking from side to side while maintaining balance during fast, agile flight. In the air, the striking contrast between its black body and the white underwings is unmistakable, while its exceptionally short tail provides another key field mark. Although zoo visitors often see it perched, the bird’s true appeal lies in its remarkable aerial abilities.

During the breeding season, bateleurs build nests high in large trees and usually lay a single egg. They reproduce relatively slowly, and breeding pairs maintain extensive territories while raising their young. As a result, they can be vulnerable to habitat loss and collisions with power lines.

The bateleur is one of Africa’s most iconic birds and is often associated with the national emblem of Zimbabwe. The emblem features the famous “Zimbabwe Bird,” a stone carving discovered at the World Heritage Site of Great Zimbabwe. This figure is regarded as a symbol of royal authority and ancestral heritage. Although its true identity remains debated, one of the leading theories suggests that it was modeled after a bateleur. With its graceful silhouette soaring across the vast African sky, the bird possesses a dignity worthy of an ancient kingdom’s symbol.
