The Seal-faced Pufferfish

最大で全長30cmほどになるフグの仲間です。琉球列島以南の日本近海から、インド洋・西太平洋の熱帯域にかけて広く分布し、主に水深50m以浅のサンゴ礁域や岩礁域に生息しています。英名は “Blackspotted puffer” ですが、アザラシや犬にそっくりの顔立ちから、“Dogface puffer” の名でも知られています。

体には黒い斑点模様が散らばり、個体によっては青みを帯びたものや黄色味の強いものも見られます。大きな目と愛嬌のある表情から観賞魚として人気が高く、水族館でも飼育されることがあります。一方で、他の多くのフグ類と同様に強い毒を持ち、誤って食べると命に関わることもあります。

食性は雑食性で、甲殻類や軟体動物、海綿動物、藻類などさまざまな生物を食べます。硬い嘴状の歯を使ってサンゴをかじることも知られており、枝状サンゴを噛み砕く姿が観察されることもあります。危険を感じると、水を吸い込んで体を大きく膨らませるフグ類特有の防御行動を見せます。膨らんだ体は捕食者に飲み込まれにくくする効果があり、外敵への威嚇にも役立っています。

The Blackspotted puffer is a species of pufferfish that can grow up to about 30 cm in length. It is distributed from the Ryukyu Islands southward throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs and rocky coastal areas at depths of less than 50 meters. Although its common English name is “Blackspotted puffer,” it is also widely known as the “Dogface puffer” because of its seal- or dog-like facial appearance.

Its body is covered with scattered black spots, and some individuals show bluish or yellowish coloration. With its large eyes and charming expression, this species is popular in the aquarium trade and is sometimes displayed in public aquariums. However, like many other pufferfish, it possesses strong toxins that can be fatal if consumed.

The species is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of organisms including crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, and algae. Using its hard beak-like teeth, it may also bite and crush branching corals. When threatened, it displays the characteristic pufferfish defense behavior of inflating its body by taking in water. Its swollen body makes it more difficult for predators to swallow and also serves as an effective warning display.
