Gymnothorax isingteena (Richardson, 1845)

「ニセ」ものか本物か
A “Fake” or the Real Thing?

全長1.8mに達する大型のウツボで、西太平洋の熱帯・亜熱帯域に分布します。日本では伊豆半島以南の太平洋岸から琉球列島にかけて見られ、浅いサンゴ礁や岩礁域に生息します。淡い体色に碁石のような黒い斑点があり、幼魚では大きく、成長すると小さく数が増えます。鋭い歯を持ちますが、観賞魚として水族館などで飼育されることも多い種です。

「ニセ」や「モドキ」は、似た別種が先に知られていた場合につけられます。しかし本種の場合、「ゴイシウツボ」という別種が現存するわけではありません。かつて使われたゴイシウツボ Gymnothorax pescadoris は、現在ではニセゴイシウツボ Gymnothorax isingteena と同一種とされ、異名になっています。ニセゴイシウツボの学名は1845年、ゴイシウツボは1902年に記載されたため、先取権により現在の学名は Gymnothorax isingteena です。「ニセ」が残ったのは、学名の先取権によるものなのです。

繁殖は長く謎でしたが、2023年、水槽内で初めて産卵前とみられる行動が観察されました。メスが泳ぎ出すとオスが追尾し、メスの顎を咥えて、縦泳ぎのような姿勢でともに上昇しました。産卵行動と考えられますが、放精・放卵は確認されていません。大型で謎の多いウツボの繁殖生態に、これまで知られていなかった一面が明らかになりました。

The Black-spotted Moray is a large moray eel that can reach 1.8 m in length. It is distributed across tropical and subtropical waters of the western Pacific. In Japan, it occurs from the Pacific coast south of the Izu Peninsula to the Ryukyu Islands, inhabiting shallow coral reefs and rocky areas. Its pale body is marked with black spots resembling Go stones. The spots are relatively large in juveniles, becoming smaller and more numerous as the fish grows. Despite its sharp teeth, this species is also commonly kept as an aquarium fish in public aquariums and other facilities.

In Japanese, names containing “nise,” meaning “false” or “imitation,” or “modoki,” meaning “resembling,” are often given to species that resemble another species already known. In this case, however, there is no separate species currently recognized as the Goishi Utsubo, or “Go-stone Moray.” The name Goishi Utsubo, Gymnothorax pescadoris, was once used for this species, but it is now considered a synonym of the Black-spotted Moray, Gymnothorax isingteena. The scientific name Gymnothorax isingteena was published in 1845, while G. pescadoris was described in 1902. Under the principle of priority, the earlier name is retained as the valid scientific name. Thus, the “false” in its Japanese name remains because of the priority of its scientific name.

Its reproduction remained a mystery for many years, but in 2023, behavior thought to precede spawning was observed for the first time in captivity. When the female began swimming, the male followed her and then grasped her jaw with his mouth. The pair rose together in a nearly vertical swimming position. This behavior is considered to be associated with spawning, although the actual release of sperm and eggs was not observed. These observations have added new insight into the reproductive biology of this large and still mysterious moray eel.
