A Porcupinefish Endemic to Southern Australian Waters
サザングローブフィッシュは、最大全長40cmほどになる細身のハリセンボンの仲間で、オーストラリア南部沿岸にのみ生息する固有種です。南部海域は南極海流の影響を受けるため、年間を通じて水温が比較的低い冷涼な温帯海域となっています。海中には昆布類や大型海藻が茂り、サンゴ礁が発達する北部の熱帯海域とは大きく異なる景観が広がります。この海域には、オールドワイフやブルーデビル、ウィーディーシードラゴンなど、温帯性で固有性の高い魚類が多く見られます。
本種は夜行性で、昼間は岩陰や海底付近で身を潜め、夜になると活動を始めます。主な餌は貝類や甲殻類で、強靭なくちばし状の歯を使い、硬い殻も噛み砕いて食べます。危険を感じると体内に海水や空気を取り込み、体を大きく膨らませて捕食者を威嚇します。膨らむと全身の鋭い棘が立ち上がり、丸呑みにされにくくなります。
外見は広く知られるハリセンボンによく似ていますが、本種の棘は黄色味を帯びる点が特徴です。一方、ハリセンボンの棘は白っぽく、世界中の暖海に広く分布しています。このような分布や体色の違いからも、本種はオーストラリア南部の独特な海洋環境を象徴する魚といえるでしょう。
The Southern Globefish is a slender member of the porcupinefish family, reaching up to 40 cm in length, and is endemic to the southern coast of Australia. Influenced by currents flowing from the Southern Ocean, these waters remain relatively cool throughout the year and are classified as temperate marine environments. Dense forests of kelp and other large seaweeds dominate the seascape, creating a habitat very different from the coral reefs and tropical waters of northern Australia. This region is also home to many temperate endemic fishes, including the Old Wife, Blue Devil, and Weedy Seadragon.
This species is nocturnal, spending the daytime hidden among rocks or near the seafloor before becoming active at night. It feeds mainly on shellfish and crustaceans, using its powerful beak-like teeth to crush hard shells. When threatened, it inflates its body by taking in water or air, making itself appear much larger to predators. As the body expands, the sharp spines stand erect, making it difficult to swallow.
Although it closely resembles the common porcupinefish, the Southern Globefish can be distinguished by its yellowish spines, whereas those of the common species are whitish. Unlike the widely distributed porcupinefish found in warm seas around the world, this species is restricted to southern Australia, making it a symbolic fish of the region’s unique temperate marine ecosystem.
