夜の海、粘膜に包まれ身を鎮めるニシキベラ
The Cupid Wrasse Settles Down, Wrapped in Mucus in the Night Sea

全長約20cm。西太平洋から東インド洋にかけて分布し、日本では本州中部以南の岩礁域などに生息します。温帯の海に暮らす魚としてはひときわ鮮やかな体色をもち、背側は緑色、腹側は青色を帯びます。眼の周囲には赤褐色の放射状の模様があり、体の中央には赤褐色の鋸歯状の模様が走ります。

ベラ科の魚には雌雄で体色が大きく異なるものもいますが、ニシキベラではその差が比較的小さく、雄は青みが強く、雌は赤みが強い傾向があります。派手な色彩のため食用魚としては敬遠されることもありますが、白身で臭みが少なく、食味のよい魚として知られています。一方、ベラ類の多くは皮膚から粘液を分泌するため、調理の際には表面のぬめりを落とす必要があります。

この粘液には、食用の際には厄介に感じられる一面とは別の役割があります。ニシキベラは夜になると岩の隙間などに身を潜め、粘液で体を包むことがあります。この粘液の膜は、寄生生物から身を守るほか、魚の体から発せられる化学的な手掛かりを外敵に探知されにくくする「寝袋」のような役割を果たすと考えられています。この粘液に包まれることで、ニシキベラは夜の海で安心して身を鎮め、朝を待つことができるのです。

Approximately 20 cm in total length, the Cupid wrasse is distributed from the western Pacific to the eastern Indian Ocean. In Japan, it inhabits rocky reefs and other rocky habitats southward from central Honshu. For a fish living in temperate waters, it has remarkably vivid coloration. The dorsal side is greenish, while the underside is tinged blue. Around the eyes are reddish-brown radiating markings, and a reddish-brown, saw-toothed pattern runs across the middle of the body.

In some wrasses, males and females differ markedly in coloration, but the difference is relatively subtle in the Cupid wrasse. Males tend to have a stronger blue coloration, whereas females tend to be more reddish. Although its conspicuous coloration can make it seem unsuitable as a food fish, it has white flesh with little odor and is regarded as good eating. Like many wrasses, however, it secretes mucus from its skin, so the slippery coating needs to be removed when preparing the fish for the table.

This mucus has another role quite different from its inconvenience in cooking. At night, the Cupid wrasse hides in crevices among rocks and may envelop its body in a layer of mucus. This mucus sheath is thought to help protect the fish from parasites and to make it more difficult for predators to detect chemical cues released by its body, functioning much like a sleeping bag. Wrapped in this protective layer, the Cupid wrasse can settle down safely in the nighttime sea and wait for morning.
