地中海に暮らす性転換魚
A Sex-Changing Fish of the Mediterranean
体長約25cm。東部大西洋のポルトガル沿岸からモロッコ、カナリア諸島にかけて、さらに地中海や黒海に広く分布する魚です。水深10～100mほどの砂泥底や岩礁域、アマモ場などに生息し、群れを作って泳ぎながら、動物プランクトンや小型甲殻類、多毛類などを捕食します。
銀色の体に青灰色の背をもち、胸鰭の後方にある大きな黒い斑紋が特徴です。この斑紋が英名「Blotched Picarel（斑点のあるピカレル）」の由来となっています。普段は控えめな色彩ですが、繁殖期になると雄は青色や黄色を帯びた鮮やかな婚姻色を示し、印象を大きく変えます。
本種は、成長に伴って雌から雄へと変化する「雌性先熟」という性転換を行う魚として知られています。若い個体の多くは雌として成熟し、一定の大きさに達すると雄へと変化します。これは、大型の雄ほど繁殖に有利になる魚類で見られる繁殖戦略の一つです。繁殖期には雄が海底に巣を作って縄張りを守り、雌を誘って産卵を行います。また、雄が卵の保護に関わることも知られており、単なる小型魚ではない複雑な繁殖生態をもっています。
地中海沿岸では地域によって食用として利用され、沿岸漁業で漁獲される魚の一つです。ただし、主要な漁業対象種ではなく、小規模な商業利用が中心です。沿岸生態系では、小型生物を捕食する一方で、大型魚などの餌となる重要な中間捕食者でもあります。目立つ色彩をもつ魚ではありませんが、体の斑紋、繁殖期の変化、そして性転換という特徴的な生態によって、地中海の海に適応した興味深い魚の一つです。
Reaching about 25 cm in length, the Blotched Picarel is distributed throughout the eastern Atlantic, from the coast of Portugal to Morocco and the Canary Islands, as well as the Mediterranean and Black Seas. It inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms, rocky reefs, and seagrass beds at depths of approximately 10–100 m, where it forms schools and feeds on zooplankton, small crustaceans, and polychaete worms.
Its silvery body, bluish-gray back, and distinctive black blotch behind the pectoral fin are its most recognizable features. This prominent marking is the origin of its English name, “Blotched Picarel.” Although its coloration is generally subdued, males develop striking blue and yellow breeding colors during the spawning season, transforming their appearance dramatically.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of this species is protogynous hermaphroditism, a reproductive strategy in which individuals mature first as females and later change sex to become males as they grow larger. This strategy is common among fishes in which larger males achieve greater reproductive success. During the breeding season, males establish and defend nests on the seafloor, attract females to spawn, and are also known to guard the eggs, demonstrating a surprisingly complex reproductive behavior for such a small fish.
Along parts of the Mediterranean coast, the Blotched Picarel is caught by coastal fisheries and is consumed locally. However, it is not considered a major commercial species, and its use remains relatively small in scale. Ecologically, it serves as an important mid-level predator by feeding on small invertebrates while also providing prey for larger fishes. Though modest in appearance, its distinctive markings, dramatic breeding coloration, and fascinating reproductive biology make it one of the Mediterranean’s most intriguing coastal fishes.
