セバエアネモネフィッシュは全長10〜14cmほど。ジャワ島周辺からアラビア半島沿岸にかけてのインド洋北部に分布するクマノミの仲間です。サンゴ礁や岩礁域に生息し、多くのクマノミ類と同様にイソギンチャクと共生しています。体表を覆う特殊な粘液によってイソギンチャクの刺胞毒の影響を受けにくく、触手の間を安全な隠れ家として利用しています。
体色は黒褐色から黒色を基調とし、体側には太い白色帯が入ります。吻部や尾びれは鮮やかな黄色ですが、成長や個体差によって黒色部分が増え、黄色がほとんど見られなくなる個体も存在します。こうした色彩の変化は観賞魚愛好家の間でもよく知られ、本種の魅力のひとつとなっています。
性質はクマノミ類の中では比較的穏やかですが、成長すると縄張り意識を示し、共生するイソギンチャクの周囲を積極的に防衛します。また、クマノミ類特有の上下に揺れるような泳ぎ方は愛らしく、水族館やアクアリウムでも人気を集めています。
英名の「Sebae clownfish」は、オランダの薬剤師であり博物学者、そして著名な標本収集家でもあったアルベルトゥス・セバ（Albertus Seba, 1665–1736）に由来します。セバは世界各地から集めた動植物や鉱物の標本をもとに、精緻な図版を収録した『Thesaurus』を刊行しました。この書物は近代博物学の発展に大きな影響を与えたことで知られています。彼の名は本種のほか、アフリカニシキヘビ（Python sebae）やセンネンダイ（Lutjanus sebae）などにも残されており、博物学の黄金時代を現代に伝える存在となっています。
The Sebae Clownfish reaches 10–14 cm in length and inhabits the northern Indian Ocean, ranging from Java to the Arabian Peninsula. Like many clownfish species, it lives among sea anemones on coral and rocky reefs. A special mucus coating on its skin protects it from the anemone’s stinging cells, allowing the fish to use the tentacles as a safe refuge from predators.
Its coloration consists of a dark brown to black body marked with broad white bands. The snout and tail fin are typically bright yellow, although some individuals develop extensive black pigmentation as they mature, leaving little or none of the yellow coloration visible. This variation is well known among aquarium enthusiasts and contributes to the species’ appeal.
Compared with many other clownfish, the Sebae Clownfish is relatively peaceful, though adults become territorial and actively defend the sea anemone they inhabit. Its characteristic swaying swimming motion, shared by many clownfish species, gives it a charming appearance and has made it a popular subject in public aquariums and home marine aquariums alike.
The common name “Sebae Clownfish” honors Albertus Seba (1665–1736), a Dutch pharmacist, naturalist, and renowned collector of natural history specimens. Seba assembled an extraordinary collection of plants, animals, and minerals from around the world and published the richly illustrated Thesaurus, a monumental work that helped shape the development of modern natural history. His name survives today in numerous species, including the African rock python (Python sebae) and the emperor red snapper (Lutjanus sebae), serving as a lasting reminder of the golden age of natural history exploration.
