セキセイインコ（Budgerigar）は、オーストラリア内陸部の乾燥地帯に生息する小型のインコです。野生個体の体長は約18cm、翼開長は約30cm、体重は30～40gほど。頭部は鮮やかな黄色、体は黄緑色を基調とし、背中から翼にかけては黒と黄色の細かな波模様が入ります。群れで行動し、降雨に合わせて広範囲を移動しながら草本類の種子を食べて暮らしています。オーストラリア国外では、アメリカ合衆国フロリダ州に帰化個体群が定着したことでも知られています。

現在、セキセイインコは世界で最も広く飼育されている愛玩鳥のひとつです。飼育下では野生種よりもやや大型化する傾向があり、長年の品種改良によって非常に多彩な羽色や模様が生み出されました。代表的なものとして、ノーマル（黄緑）、ノーマル（スカイブルー）、オーパリン（波模様なし）、レインボー（黄色＋スカイブルー）、ハルクイン（Harlequin / Pied）、ルチノー（全身黄色）、アルビノ（全身白色）などが知られています。こうした色彩の違いは、黄色・青色・黒色の色素や羽毛構造に関わる遺伝的変異の組み合わせによって生じており、その系統数は数千にも及ぶといわれています。

また、ヨーロッパの品評会向けに改良された大型の「ジャンボセキセイインコ」は体長23cm以上に達し、頭部の羽毛が発達した迫力ある姿が特徴です。一方、日本で作出された「羽衣セキセイインコ」は、背中や肩の羽毛が渦を巻く独特の巻き毛で知られています。セキセイインコの品種改良は1850年代のイギリスで本格化し、現在では世界中の愛好家やブリーダーによって多様な系統が受け継がれています。人の言葉をまねる能力や人懐こい性格、飼育のしやすさも相まって、今日もなお高い人気を誇る小鳥です。

The Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is a small parrot native to the arid inland regions of Australia. Wild birds measure about 18 cm in length, have a wingspan of around 30 cm, and weigh between 30 and 40 grams. Their heads are bright yellow, their bodies are predominantly yellow-green, and their backs and wings are marked with fine black-and-yellow barring. They live in flocks and travel widely in response to rainfall, feeding mainly on the seeds of grasses and other plants. Feral populations have also become established outside Australia, including in the U.S. state of Florida.

Today, the budgerigar is one of the most widely kept companion birds in the world. Birds bred in captivity tend to be slightly larger than their wild counterparts, and more than a century of selective breeding has produced an extraordinary variety of colors and patterns. From the wild green plumage of their Australian ancestors, budgerigars have been transformed into birds displaying nearly every combination of yellow, blue, white, and black. Well-known varieties include the Normal Green, Normal Sky Blue, Opaline (lacking the typical wing barring), Rainbow (a combination of yellow and sky blue), Harlequin / Pied, Lutino (entirely yellow), and Albino (entirely white).

Selective breeding has also produced distinctive body types. The large “English Budgerigar,” developed for exhibition in Europe, often exceeds 23 cm in length and is characterized by its heavily feathered head and impressive appearance. In Japan, breeders developed the “Hagoromo Budgerigar,” known for the unique curled feathers that form rosette-like patterns on its back and shoulders. Systematic breeding began in Britain during the 1850s, and enthusiasts around the world have continued to develop and preserve a remarkable diversity of budgerigar varieties. Their ability to mimic human speech, friendly disposition, and ease of care have ensured their enduring popularity as companion birds.
