王冠を戴く海のエンゼルフィッシュ
A Crowned Angelfish of the Sea
全長は最大45cmに達する大型のヤッコ類です。メキシコ湾岸やフロリダ、バハマ諸島からブラジルにかけての西大西洋の亜熱帯域に分布し、主にサンゴ礁や岩礁域の海底近くで見られます。頭部には王冠を思わせる青い斑紋があり、これが英名「クイーン」の由来となっています。コバルトブルーを基調に黄色が鮮やかに入る体色は非常に美しく、名の通り気品ある姿が特徴です。一方、和名はホクロヤッコと呼ばれ、やや親しみやすい印象の名称が与えられています。
幼魚は近縁のブルーエンゼルフィッシュとよく似ていますが、尻ビレ後端が青く、体側の白い縦縞がやや湾曲する点が本種の特徴です。対してブルーエンゼルフィッシュは尻ビレ後端が黄色く、縦縞は直線的です。成魚になると、頭部の王冠状の斑紋の有無によって容易に識別できます。両種の交雑個体はタウンゼントエンゼルと呼ばれ、観賞魚として流通することもあります。
自然下では単独またはペアで見られることが多く、特に成魚は長期間同じ相手と行動する傾向があり、一夫一婦的な関係を築くと考えられています。主に海綿動物を中心とした底生生物を食べるほか、藻類なども摂取する雑食性を示します。その華やかな外見から観賞魚として高い人気を誇る種です。
This species is a large angelfish, reaching a maximum total length of about 45 cm. It is distributed in the subtropical western Atlantic, from the Gulf of Mexico and Florida through the Bahamas to Brazil, where it inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas, typically near the seafloor. A crown-like blue marking on the head gives rise to the name “Queen.” Its vivid coloration—cobalt blue accented with bright yellow—creates an elegant and regal appearance befitting its name. In contrast, its Japanese name Hokuro-yakko has a more familiar tone.
Juveniles closely resemble the related Blue Angelfish, but can be distinguished by the blue posterior edge of the anal fin and the slightly curved white vertical bands along the body. In the Blue Angelfish, the anal fin edge is yellow and the white bands are straight. As they mature, the presence or absence of the crown-like marking on the head makes identification straightforward. Hybrids between the two species are known as the Townsend Angelfish and are sometimes found in the aquarium trade.
In the wild, individuals are often seen alone or in pairs, with adults in particular tending to remain with the same partner over long periods, suggesting a monogamous bond. They are omnivorous, feeding primarily on sponges and other benthic organisms, as well as algae. Their striking appearance makes them a highly popular species in the aquarium trade.
