Acanthurus dussumieri (Valenciennes, 1835)
ニセモノ扱いの不遇なニザダイ
An Unfortunate Surgeonfish Branded as an Impostor Body
体長40cm。熱帯から亜熱帯のインド洋および西太平洋に広く分布しています。日本では茨城県以南の太平洋岸や琉球列島、小笠原諸島などに生息し、サンゴ礁や岩礁域で藻類を食べながら暮らしています。
目の周囲や背鰭、臀鰭は鮮やかな黄色を帯び、尾鰭は青みを帯びた地色に暗色斑が入ります。また、尾柄部にはニザダイ科の特徴である鋭い棘があり、その周囲は白く縁取られています。「ニセカンランハギ」という和名は、同じニザダイ科のカンランハギによく似た姿に由来します。しかし擬態しているわけではなく、名前だけを見ると少し気の毒な印象を受けます。両種はよく似ていますが、カンランハギには目の後方の暗色斑と鰓ぶた後方の黄色い帯があることで見分けられます。
英名の Penciled Surgeonfish の「Penciled」は、体側に並ぶ鉛筆で描いたような細い縞模様に由来しています。また、種小名 dussumieri は、本種のタイプ標本を収集したフランスの探検家 Jean-Jacques Dussumier への献名です。彼の名は多くの魚類の学名に残されており、ニシン目ギンイワシ属 Dussumieria の属名にも採用されています。一見何気ない学名や英名にも、その魚を発見した人々や分類学の歴史が刻まれているのです。
Reaching up to 40 cm in length, the Penciled Surgeonfish is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. In Japan, it occurs along the Pacific coast south of Ibaraki Prefecture, as well as around the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands, where it inhabits coral reefs and rocky reefs, grazing on algae.
The area around the eyes, as well as the dorsal and anal fins, is bright yellow, while the caudal fin is bluish with dark markings. Like other surgeonfishes, it possesses a sharp scalpel-like spine on each side of the caudal peduncle, surrounded by a conspicuous white patch. Its Japanese name, Nise-kanranhagi (“False Olive Surgeonfish”), was given because of its close resemblance to the closely related Olive Surgeonfish. However, it is not a case of mimicry, making the label of “false” seem rather unfair. The two species can be distinguished by the Olive Surgeonfish’s dark spot behind the eye and the yellow band behind the gill cover.
The English name Penciled Surgeonfish refers to the fine, pencil-like lines running along the body. The specific epithet dussumieri honors the French explorer Jean-Jacques Dussumier, who collected the type specimen of this species. His name appears in the scientific names of numerous fishes and has even been adopted as the genus name Dussumieria, a group of round herrings. Even the scientific and common names of a fish often preserve the history of its discovery and the people who contributed to its classification.
