全長30cm。インド・西太平洋の熱帯域に広く分布し、紅海・東アフリカからハワイ諸島、マーケサス諸島、デュシー島まで、北は南日本、南はグレートバリアリーフやロードハウ島に及びます。サンゴ礁やラグーンに生息し、サンゴの多い場所ではペアで見られることが多い魚です。主にサンゴのポリプやイソギンチャク類を食べますが、小型の無脊椎動物や藻類も餌とします。繁殖時にもペアを形成することが知られています。
白い体に細い黒い縦縞が多数並び、背鰭、尾鰭、臀鰭は鮮やかな黄色です。眼を通る太い黒帯も特徴の一つです。和名は、よく似たフウライチョウチョウウオやヒメフウライチョウチョウウオとの関係から「ニセフウライ」と名づけられました。フウライチョウチョウウオでは体側の黒い縞が斜めに走るのに対し、本種ではほぼ垂直に並びます。また、ヒメフウライチョウチョウウオでは眼を通る黒帯が途中で途切れるのに対し、本種では眼を横切って連続しています。
英名の「Lined butterflyfish」は、体側に並ぶ特徴的な黒い線に由来する、シンプルな名前です。最大30cmに達し、チョウチョウウオ属では最大の種とされています。大型でありながら、サンゴ礁の景観に溶け込むような白と黒、黄色の鮮やかな体色は、本種を代表する特徴となっています。
The Lined butterflyfish (Chaetodon lineolatus) reaches 30 cm in total length. It is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Marquesas Islands and Ducie Island, and from southern Japan southward to the Great Barrier Reef and Lord Howe Island. It inhabits coral reefs and lagoons and is often seen in pairs around areas rich in corals. Its diet consists mainly of coral polyps and sea anemones, supplemented by small invertebrates and algae. Pairs are also known to form during reproduction.
The body is white with numerous fine black vertical lines, while the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are bright yellow. A broad black band running through the eye is another distinctive feature. Its Japanese name, meaning “false fourline butterflyfish,” reflects its close resemblance to the Fourline butterflyfish and the Vagabond butterflyfish. In the Fourline butterflyfish, the black lines on the body run diagonally, whereas those of the Lined butterflyfish are arranged almost vertically. In the Vagabond butterflyfish, the black band through the eye is interrupted, while in the Lined butterflyfish it remains continuous across the eye.
The English name “Lined butterflyfish” simply refers to the characteristic lines along its body. Reaching up to 30 cm, it is considered the largest species in the genus Chaetodon. Despite its large size, its striking combination of white, black, and yellow allows it to blend naturally into the colorful surroundings of coral reefs.
