Toxotes jaculatrix (Pallas, 1767)

The River Archer That Hits Targets 2 Meters Away

The banded archerfish grows to around 30 cm in length, although individuals are more commonly about 20 cm. Its silvery body has four to five dark, band-like markings along the back, while the dorsal fin is also marked with black spots. It is widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, from India through Southeast Asia to the Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and northern Australia. It mainly inhabits estuaries and brackish waters surrounded by mangroves, but may also travel upstream into freshwater.

The English name “archerfish” refers to its remarkable habit of shooting jets of water at prey above the surface. The genus name Toxotes comes from the Greek word for “archer,” while the species name jaculatrix derives from a Latin word meaning “one who throws” or “archer.”

This distinctive behavior is a form of hunting from below the water’s surface. When the fish spots an insect or other small prey on a branch or leaf above the water, it raises just the tip of its mouth above the surface, takes aim, and forcefully shoots a jet of water at the target. The jet can reach at least 2 m, knocking the prey into the water, where the fish quickly moves to the spot where it falls and devours it. Looking upward from beneath the surface, however, causes the apparent position of an object to shift because of light refraction. Archerfish are able to compensate for this distortion and aim accurately at their targets.

The mechanism behind this aquatic “water gun” lies partly in the structure of the mouth. By pressing the tongue against a groove on the roof of the mouth, the fish creates a narrow passage for the water. It then rapidly compresses the water using movements involving the gill covers and surrounding structures, producing a powerful, concentrated jet. Archerfish also possess sophisticated visual abilities and can distinguish the shapes of objects. Studies of closely related species have even shown that they can distinguish individual human faces from among multiple images, suggesting visual recognition abilities far beyond those of a simple “water-shooting” specialist.
