アフリカ東部から南部にかけて広く分布するブッポウソウの一種です。全長は36〜40cmほどで、胸は名の通りライラック色（淡紫色）を呈し、腹から尾にかけての水色、風切羽の濃紺、背の褐色など、約8色で彩られた体色が特徴です。光の当たり方によって色合いが変化し、水彩画のような印象を与えます。多くの鳥類では雌雄で外見が異なることが多いですが、本種は雌雄ほぼ同色で見分けが難しく、幼鳥は尾羽が短いことで識別できます。

主に昆虫や小型の無脊椎動物を捕食し、サバンナや疎林など開けた環境に生息します。木の高い枝や枯れ木、時には電線など見通しのよい場所にとまり、周囲を見渡しながら獲物を探します。標的を見つけると素早く狙いを定め、急降下して地上や空中の獲物を捕らえます。また、山火事や焼畑の際に飛び出してくる昆虫を狙って集まる行動も知られており、環境の変化を利用した効率的な採餌戦略を持っています。こうした待ち伏せ型の捕食行動はエネルギー消費を抑えつつ確実に餌を得る方法といえます。

スワヒリ語で「カンブ」とも呼ばれ、ケニアでは国鳥として広く知られる存在です。その多彩な色彩は自然や文化の多様性の象徴として語られることがあります。観光客にも人気があり、ライオンやチーターなどと並び、一度は見てみたいとされる動物の一つです。獲物を探すために枯れ木に佇む姿は初心者にとって絶好の被写体であり、アフリカ全域において最も撮影されることの多い鳥と言われています。飛翔する姿も美しく、熟練のカメラマンにとっても、その素早い動きをフレームに収める魅力的な対象です。このように観光資源としての価値も高く、ケニアでは「国の宝」と称されることもあります。

The lilac-breasted roller is a species of roller widely distributed across eastern and southern Africa. It measures about 36–40 cm in length. As its name suggests, the breast is lilac (pale purple), and together with the light blue from the belly to the tail, the deep indigo of the flight feathers, and the brown of the back, the bird displays a body coloration composed of about eight hues. The tones shift with the light, giving an impression reminiscent of a watercolor painting. While many bird species show sexual dimorphism, males and females of this species are almost identical in appearance, making them difficult to distinguish; juveniles can be recognized by their shorter tail feathers.

It mainly feeds on insects and other small invertebrates and inhabits open environments such as savannas and open woodlands. Perching on high branches, dead trees, or sometimes even power lines, it scans the surroundings for prey. Once a target is spotted, it fixes its aim and dives swiftly to capture prey on the ground or in the air. It is also known to gather around bushfires or recently burned fields to catch insects flushed out by the flames, demonstrating an efficient foraging strategy that takes advantage of environmental changes. This sit-and-wait hunting method allows it to conserve energy while securing food effectively.

Known in Swahili as “Kambu,” the species is widely recognized as the national bird of Kenya. Its vibrant coloration is often said to symbolize the diversity of the country’s nature and culture. It is also popular among tourists and is considered one of the animals people most wish to see, alongside lions and cheetahs. Perched on a dead tree while searching for prey, it makes an ideal subject for beginners, and is often said to be one of the most frequently photographed birds in Africa. Its flight is equally beautiful, and even experienced photographers are drawn to capturing its swift movements in frame. Owing to its high value as a tourism resource, it is sometimes referred to in Kenya as a “national treasure.”
