全長約15cmになるチョウチョウウオの仲間です。日本では本州以南の沿岸に広く分布し、朝鮮半島、台湾、中国南東部にも生息しています。学名 Chaetodon nippon の種小名「nippon」は日本に由来しますが、日本固有種ではありません。頭部が白粉を塗ったように白く見えることから「シラコダイ」の名が付けられました。
岩礁域や藻場周辺に生息し、小型の底生無脊椎動物や付着生物などをついばんで生活しています。チョウチョウウオ類はサンゴ礁に暮らす熱帯魚という印象が強いものの、本種は比較的低水温への耐性が高く、温帯海域に適応した代表的な種として知られています。同じく温帯域で見られるチョウチョウウオやチョウハンなどとともに、日本近海の沿岸生態系を構成する魚の一つです。特に本州沿岸では個体数が多く、繁殖も行われています。
本種の学名を記載した研究者の一人であるルートヴィヒ・デーデルラインは、19世紀後半に来日したドイツの生物学者です。わずか約2年間の滞在中に数多くの標本を収集し、日本の生物相を欧州の学術界へ紹介しました。彼が集めた標本をもとに新種として記載された生物は多く、深海性甲殻類のオオグソクムシや原始的なサメとして知られるラブカもその代表例です。シラコダイの学名にも、日本の自然を世界へ伝えた彼らの足跡が残されています。
The Blackloin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon nippon) is a member of the butterflyfish family that grows to about 15 cm in length. In Japan, it is widely distributed along the coasts south of Honshu and also occurs around the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and southeastern China. Although its specific name, nippon, refers to Japan, the species is not endemic to the country. Its Japanese name, Shirakodai, derives from the white coloration of the head, which resembles a face dusted with white powder.
This species inhabits rocky reefs and areas of seaweed beds, where it feeds on small benthic invertebrates and other organisms attached to the substrate. Butterflyfishes are often associated with tropical coral reefs, but the Blackloin Butterflyfish is relatively tolerant of cooler water temperatures and is regarded as one of the representative butterflyfish species adapted to temperate seas. Together with other temperate species such as the Threadfin Butterflyfish and the Oriental Butterflyfish, it forms part of the coastal fish communities of the waters surrounding Japan. It is particularly abundant along the coast of Honshu, where it also breeds.
One of the scientists who described this species was Ludwig Döderlein, a German zoologist who visited Japan in the late nineteenth century. During a stay of only about two years, he collected a vast number of specimens and introduced Japan’s rich fauna to the scientific community in Europe. Many species were later described from material he gathered, including the giant isopod and the frilled shark, both remarkable inhabitants of the deep sea. The scientific name of the Blackloin Butterflyfish thus preserves a connection to the pioneering researchers who helped reveal the diversity of Japan’s natural world.
