Pan troglodytes (Blumenbach, 1799)

The Laughing Neighbor

Chimpanzees have a head and body length of about 85 cm in males and 77.5 cm in females, with males weighing 40–60 kg and females 32–47 kg. They are distributed across the tropical forests and forest–savanna mosaics of western and central Africa. Belonging to the family Hominidae, chimpanzees, together with bonobos, are the closest living relatives of humans. DNA analyses suggest that the common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees diverged approximately 4.9 million years ago.

Chimpanzees are renowned for their exceptional intelligence. They use a wide variety of tools depending on the task, such as modifying twigs to fish termites and ants from their nests, or using stones and fallen logs to crack open hard nuts. These skills are not innate but are learned by observing parents and other members of the group, giving rise to a form of culture. Different populations use different techniques, and each region has its own distinctive cultural traditions.

Chimpanzees also display remarkably rich emotional expression. During play, such as tickling or chasing one another, they produce vocalizations resembling laughter. Although they do not possess spoken language, they communicate effectively through a combination of calls, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact, enabling them to maintain complex social relationships. Mutual grooming is not only important for hygiene but also serves as a vital means of strengthening social bonds.

At the same time, their intelligence and physical abilities make them challenging animals to manage in captivity. There have been reports from around the world of chimpanzees escaping after carefully observing their keepers’ routines and exploiting brief opportunities. Adult males are immensely powerful, far stronger than humans, and territorial conflicts between neighboring groups can become so violent that they result in fatal attacks. For this reason, modern zoos manage chimpanzees with rigorous safety measures, recognizing that despite their close relationship to humans, they remain powerful wild apes. Their remarkable intelligence and immense strength are qualities that deserve both admiration and respect.
