A Marsupial That Leaps Across Rocks Without Slipping
シマオイワワラビーは、オーストラリアの乾燥した岩山地帯に生息する小型の有袋類で、英名では「Yellow-footed rock-wallaby（黄色い足を持つ岩ワラビー）」と呼ばれます。頭胴長48〜65cm、尾長57〜70cm、体重6〜11kgほどで、長い尾を巧みに使いながら険しい岩場を軽快に跳び回ります。分布はニューサウスウェールズ州西部、南オーストラリア州東部、クイーンズランド州南西部などに限られ、断崖や岩の露出した地形を好み、人間の居住地付近ではほとんど見られません。体毛は灰褐色を基調とし、黄色味を帯びた四肢と縞模様の入った尾が特徴です。
イワワラビー属の仲間は、足裏にも毛が生えていることが知られており、これが滑りやすい岩場での優れたグリップ力を生み出しています。その敏捷な動きから「オーストラリアのシャモア」と呼ばれることもあります。主に草や低木の葉を食べ、暑い昼間は岩陰で休み、朝夕に活動することが多い動物です。
なお、「ワラビー」という名称は分類学上の正式なグループ名ではなく、一般的には小型のカンガルー類を指します。大型種はカンガルー、中間的な種はワラルーと呼ばれます。近年の遺伝子研究では、本種には南オーストラリア州からニューサウスウェールズ州に分布する基亜種と、クイーンズランド州南西部に分布する亜種 celeris の2亜種が存在することが示されています。
The Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby is a small marsupial inhabiting the arid rocky regions of Australia. Its head-body length ranges from 48 to 65 cm, with a tail length of 57 to 70 cm and a body weight of 6 to 11 kg. It is distributed in isolated areas of western New South Wales, eastern South Australia, and southwestern Queensland, where it prefers steep rocky outcrops and rugged terrain far from human settlements. Its grayish-brown fur, yellowish limbs, and striped tail are distinctive features.
Members of the rock-wallaby genus have fur-covered foot pads, which provide excellent grip on slippery cliffs and rocky surfaces. Thanks to this adaptation, they are able to move swiftly and skillfully across steep terrain. They mainly feed on grasses and shrubs, resting in the shade of rocks during the hot daytime hours and becoming active in the early morning and evening.
The term “wallaby” is not a strict scientific classification, but generally refers to smaller kangaroo relatives. Larger species are called kangaroos, while intermediate-sized species are known as wallaroos. Recent genetic studies have revealed that the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby consists of two subspecies: Petrogale xanthopus xanthopus, distributed in South Australia and New South Wales, and Petrogale xanthopus celeris, found in southwestern Queensland.
