ゴリラはなぜ胸を叩く？
Why do gorillas beat their chests?

頭胴長（体長）オス103 – 107cm、身長オス136 – 178cm、体重オス145 – 191kg、メス58 – 72kg。西アフリカ（ナイジェリア、カメルーン、コンゴなど） の低地の熱帯森林に生息します。主に果実を食べ、オスのゴリラなら1日に30kg以上もの餌を食べるそうです。

ゴリラは，ヒガシゴリラとニシゴリラの2種に分類され、全部で4つの亜種がいます。いずれも生息地の環境破壊と密猟によりその数は減少し絶滅が危惧されています。ニシゴリラはニシローランドゴリラとクロスリバーゴリラの2亜種があり、飼育下のゴリラの多くはニシローランドゴリラで，日本の動物園も全てそうです。

野生種は2頭から20頭ほどの群れで暮らします。リーダーはシルバーバックと呼ばれる背中だけが銀白色になる性成熟した雄です。比較的穏やかな性格で争いを好みません。胸を叩くドラミングという行為も威嚇のためではなく、むしろ相手と戦わずに引き分けるための表現であるという説が有力と考えられています。ゴリラは体が大きいほど社会的地位が高く、戦闘能力も高いことから、胸を叩くという行為で自分の身体的能力を相手に伝え、暴力を避けることができるのではないかと推測されます。

しかし力の強さは圧倒的で握力は人間の10倍(400～500kgw)程もあります。ゴリラは主に木の上で生活しますが、150 kg前後ある体重をものともせず腕1本で枝にぶら下がれるのはその為です。

Gorillas are classified into two species, Eastern Gorilla and Western Gorilla, and there are four subspecies in total. Both species are at risk of extinction due to environmental destruction of their habitats and poaching. Western Gorilla has two subspecies, Western Lowland Gorilla and Cross River Gorilla, and most of the gorillas in captivity are Western Lowland Gorilla, and all of them are in Japanese zoos.

Wild species live in groups of 2 to 20. The leader is a sexually mature male called a silverback, whose back is silvery white. They have a relatively calm personality and do not like fighting. The prevailing theory is that the act of drumming by beating one’s chest is not for intimidation, but rather is a way of expressing a draw with an opponent without fighting. The larger a gorilla is, the higher his social status and fighting ability, so it is speculated that by beating one’s chest, he is able to communicate his physical strength to the opponent and avoid violence.

However, their strength is overwhelming, with a grip strength that is about 10 times that of a human (400-500 kgw). Gorillas mainly live in trees, and this is why they can hang from branches with just one arm, despite their weight of around 150 kg.
