カスミチョウチョウウオ Pyramid butterflyfish は、体長18cmほどのチョウチョウウオの一種です。日本では紀伊半島以南に分布し、インド洋から太平洋にかけての熱帯域、南はグレートバリアリーフ、東はハワイ諸島に至る広い範囲のサンゴ礁域や岩礁域に生息しています。特にサンゴ礁外縁の斜面など、潮流の強い外洋に面した場所で見られることが多く、水中を漂う動物プランクトンを主な餌としています。

本種はチョウチョウウオ類の中では珍しく群れを形成する性質が強く、数十〜数百匹にもなる大規模な群泳を行います。こうした群れが密集して遊泳する様子は非常に目立ち、水中の視界が霞んで見えることに由来して和名が付けられたとされています。また夜間には体色が変化し、白色域が灰色がかるとともに体側に白い円形斑が現れるなど、昼間とは異なる模様を示すことが知られています。

体色は白と黄色を基調としており、体側中央から後方にかけて広がる大きな白色域が特徴です。この白斑の形がピラミッドのように見えることが英名の由来となっています。体側上部から背鰭、臀鰭にかけては黄色味を帯び、腹鰭や尾鰭は淡色です。頭部は黒褐色でコントラストの強い外見を持ちますが、飼育下では色彩がやや淡くなることがあります。また夜になると、全体的に灰色がかった体の両脇に白く丸い模様が浮かび上がり、昼間とは異なる外見を示します。このように昼夜で体色が変化する点も、本種の興味深い特徴の一つです。

The Pyramid butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis) is a species of butterflyfish that reaches about 18 cm in length. In Japan, it occurs south of the Kii Peninsula and is widely distributed throughout tropical regions of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef to the south and the Hawaiian Islands to the east. It inhabits coral and rocky reefs, particularly on outer reef slopes exposed to strong oceanic currents, where it feeds primarily on zooplankton drifting in the water column.

Unlike many other butterflyfishes, this species is highly gregarious and often forms large schools consisting of dozens to hundreds of individuals. These dense aggregations are conspicuous underwater and are said to give rise to its Japanese name, which refers to the hazy appearance created by such swarms. At night, its coloration changes: the white area becomes grayish, and distinct pale circular spots appear on the sides, giving it a markedly different appearance from its daytime pattern.

The body coloration is characterized by a combination of white and yellow, with a large white area extending across the middle to posterior part of the body. This triangular white patch resembles a pyramid, which is the origin of its English name. The upper body, dorsal fin, and anal fin are tinged with yellow, while the pelvic and caudal fins are pale. The head is dark brown to black, creating a strong contrast. In captivity, however, the coloration may become somewhat faded. At night, the overall body takes on a grayish tone, and distinct round white spots appear on both sides of the body, giving it a markedly different appearance from its daytime pattern. The ability to change coloration between day and night is one of the notable features of this species.
