巨大化への挑戦が生んだ金魚
A Goldfish Born from the Pursuit of Giant Size

ジャンボ獅子頭（Jumbo Shishigashira）は、通称「ジャンボオランダ」とも呼ばれる大型の金魚です。金魚の中でも最大級に成長する品種として知られ、大きなものでは全長60cm近く、あるいはそれを超える個体もいるとされています。その誕生は比較的新しく、1990年代後半に熊本県長洲町の金魚生産者・村木甚太郎氏によって作出されました。

誕生のきっかけは、オランダ獅子頭の繁殖過程で現れる体の長い個体に注目したことでした。村木氏はそうした個体を選別し、特に大型化したもの同士を交配することを繰り返して系統を固定したとされています。一部には和金との交雑によって生まれたという説もありますが、村木氏自身はオランダ獅子頭の選抜育種による作出であると述べています。体形は一般的なオランダ獅子頭よりも長く、頭部には獅子頭系特有の肉瘤が発達します。基本色は鮮やかな素赤で、成長した姿は池を泳ぐコイを思わせるほどの迫力があります。

ジャンボ獅子頭の影響は一品種にとどまりませんでした。この系統をもとにジャンボ東錦、ジャンボ桜東、ジャンボ青分などが作出され、さらに隼人錦や隼人和錦といった新品種も誕生しており、現代の大型金魚品種群の礎を築いた存在といえます。

また、本種は熊本県長洲町の発展とも深く結び付いています。かつて日本の金魚三大産地といえば奈良県大和郡山市、愛知県弥富市、東京都江戸川区周辺が定番でした。しかし近年では熊本県長洲町を新たな主要産地として挙げることもあります。その背景には、ジャンボ獅子頭の成功によって長洲町の名が全国に広まったことがあります。ジャンボ獅子頭は単なる大型金魚ではなく、一つの産地の歴史と現代金魚文化の発展を象徴する品種です。

The Jumbo Shishigashira, also known as the “Jumbo Oranda,” is a large ornamental goldfish recognized as one of the largest varieties of goldfish. Exceptional individuals are said to reach nearly 60 cm in length, and some may even exceed that size. This relatively recent breed was developed in the late 1990s by goldfish breeder Jintaro Muraki in Nagasu Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

The origin of the breed began with Muraki’s interest in unusually long-bodied individuals that occasionally appeared among Oranda Shishigashira offspring. By repeatedly selecting and breeding the largest specimens, he gradually established a strain with a strong tendency toward exceptional growth. Although some sources suggest that the breed may have originated through crosses with Wakin goldfish, Muraki himself maintained that it was created solely through selective breeding of Oranda stock. Compared with ordinary Orandas, the Jumbo Shishigashira has a longer, more powerful body while retaining the characteristic fleshy head growth, or wen, of lionhead-type goldfish. Its traditional color is a vivid solid red, and fully grown individuals possess an impressive presence reminiscent of a koi carp.

The influence of the Jumbo Shishigashira extends far beyond a single variety. It served as the foundation for several related breeds, including Jumbo Azumanishiki, Jumbo Sakura Azuma, and Jumbo Aobun. In addition, other varieties such as Hayato Nishiki and Hayato Wakin were later developed from these lines. As a result, the Jumbo Shishigashira can be regarded as one of the cornerstones of modern large-bodied goldfish breeding in Japan.

The breed is also closely tied to the history of Nagasu Town. Traditionally, Japan’s three major goldfish-producing regions were Yamatokoriyama in Nara Prefecture, Yatomi in Aichi Prefecture, and the Edogawa area of Tokyo. In recent years, however, Nagasu has increasingly been recognized as one of the country’s leading goldfish centers. The success and popularity of the Jumbo Shishigashira played a major role in bringing national attention to the town. More than simply a giant goldfish, it has become a symbol of both the development of modern goldfish culture and the rise of Nagasu as a major breeding center.
