The Mackerel That Filters the Sea With Its Wide Mouth

体長25cmほど。インド洋から西太平洋の熱帯・亜熱帯海域に広く分布するサバ科の魚です。近年は分布域を西方へ拡大しており、東アフリカ沿岸や紅海を経て、スエズ運河を通じて地中海でも確認されています。沿岸域や港湾、内湾、ラグーンなどに生息し、特にプランクトンが豊富なやや濁った海を好みます。

群れを作って回遊する魚で、動物性プランクトンを主食としています。最大の特徴は、口を大きく開けたまま泳ぐ独特の摂餌行動です。海水ごと大量のプランクトンを取り込み、えらにある「鰓耙（さいは）」と呼ばれる櫛状の器官で餌だけをこし取ります。このため、水族館では大きく口を開けて隊列を組みながら泳ぐ姿が人気を集めています。サバ類の中では比較的小型ながら、集団で行動するため迫力があり、銀色の体が光を反射して美しく見えます。

食用魚としても重要で、各地で生鮮、冷凍、干物、塩漬け、燻製、缶詰などに加工されます。日本では主に琉球列島周辺で漁獲され、沖縄での地方名「グルクマー」がそのまま標準和名になりました。学名は Rastrelliger kanagurta といい、属名 Rastrelliger は「熊手を持つもの」を意味し、発達した鰓耙を表した名と考えられています。英名では “Indian mackerel” と呼ばれています。

The Indian mackerel is a member of the mackerel family that reaches about 25 cm in length. It is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. In recent decades, its range has expanded westward, and the species is now found along the coast of East Africa, in the Red Sea, and even in the Mediterranean Sea after passing through the Suez Canal. It inhabits coastal waters, harbors, bays, and lagoons, especially favoring turbid waters rich in plankton.

This species forms schools and feeds mainly on zooplankton. One of its most distinctive behaviors is swimming with its mouth wide open while feeding. It takes in large amounts of seawater and filters out plankton using comb-like structures on its gills called gill rakers. In aquariums, schools of Indian mackerel swimming in formation with their mouths agape are a popular sight. Although relatively small among mackerels, their synchronized movements and silvery bodies reflecting light create an impressive display.

The species is also an important food fish and is sold fresh, frozen, dried, salted, smoked, and canned in many regions. In Japan, it is mainly caught around the Ryukyu Islands, and its standard Japanese name “Gurukuma” comes directly from the Okinawan local name “Gurukumā.” Its scientific name is Rastrelliger kanagurta. The genus name Rastrelliger means “one that carries a rake,” referring to its well-developed gill rakers. In English, the species is commonly known as the “Indian mackerel.”
