体長約45cm。夏毛は褐色、冬毛は全身が白色となり、季節によって姿を大きく変えます。トウホクノウサギは東北地方に分布するニホンノウサギの地域個体群に付けられてきた名称です。かつては亜種 Lepus brachyurus angustidens とされましたが、体サイズや毛色の差は連続的で明瞭とはいえず、亜種としての有効性を疑問視する見解もあります。現在は独立した亜種としない扱いもみられますが、地域変異を示す実用的な呼称として広く用いられています。
落葉広葉樹林や里山の草地、農耕地周辺に生息し、主に夜間に活動します。春から夏は草本類や若葉を食べ、冬は樹皮や枝先をかじって厳しい季節を乗り越えます。とくに積雪期には白い冬毛が雪景色に溶け込み、キツネや猛禽類などの天敵から身を守る重要な役割を果たします。雪原に点々と続く足跡は、静まり返った冬の里山に息づく野生の気配を感じさせる光景でもあります。
古くから日本では、月の模様が餅をつくウサギの姿に見えるとされてきました。その由来は、飢えた老人に身を捧げたウサギが帝釈天によって月に昇らされたという仏教説話にあるといわれます。東北地方でも秋の名月に団子やススキを供える風習が受け継がれ、澄み切った夜空に浮かぶ月と静かな雪野に佇むトウホクノウサギの姿は、自然と信仰が重なり合う象徴的な存在として人々の心に刻まれてきました。
Head–body length is about 45 cm. Its coat changes markedly with the seasons: brown in summer and entirely white in winter. The Tohoku hare is a name traditionally applied to the regional population of the Japanese hare distributed in northeastern Japan. It was once described as the subspecies Lepus brachyurus angustidens, but differences in body size and coat color are continuous rather than clearly distinct, and some researchers question the validity of recognizing it as a separate subspecies. Today it is often not treated as an independent subspecies, yet the name remains widely used as a practical term indicating regional variation.
It inhabits deciduous broadleaf forests, satoyama woodlands, grasslands, and farmland margins, and is mainly nocturnal. From spring to summer it feeds on grasses and fresh leaves, while in winter it gnaws bark and twigs to survive harsh conditions. During snowy months, its white winter coat provides effective camouflage against predators such as foxes and raptors. The dotted tracks left across quiet snowfields are a familiar sign of wildlife in the winter landscape of northeastern Japan.
In Japan, people have long imagined the pattern on the moon as a hare pounding rice cakes. This image is said to derive from a Buddhist tale in which a self-sacrificing hare was raised to the moon by Indra. In the Tohoku region as well, the custom of offering dumplings and pampas grass at the harvest moon continues. The sight of a hare standing in a silent snowy field beneath a clear autumn moon has become a symbolic image linking nature, faith, and seasonal tradition.
