A Pink-Striped Dartfish Hovering Above the Coral Reef
体長約10cm。紅海からインド洋、西太平洋にかけて広く分布するハゼの仲間で、日本では八丈島、小笠原諸島、琉球列島などで見ることができます。サンゴ礁や岩礁域の浅場に生息し、水深40mほどまでの海で暮らしています。主に動物プランクトンや小型甲殻類を捕食し、単独やペア、時には小群で行動します。警戒心が強く、危険を感じると素早くサンゴや岩の隙間へ身を隠します。
細長い体と優雅に伸びる背びれや尾びれ、そして体側に並ぶ鮮やかなピンク色の横帯が特徴です。この縞模様がシマウマを思わせることから、英名・和名ともに「ゼブラ」の名が付けられました。体色は淡い黄色から青みを帯びた白色で、派手さこそないものの上品で美しい色彩をしています。
普段は中層を漂うように泳ぎながら餌を探しており、流れのある場所では群れを作ってホバリングする姿も見られます。一方で外敵の接近には敏感で、危険を察知すると一瞬で隠れ場所へ飛び込むため、水中でもなかなか近づくことのできない魚です。
その美しい模様と温和な性質から観賞魚としても人気が高く、水族館やアクアリウムで飼育されています。サンゴ礁の上を優雅に泳ぐ姿は観賞価値が高く、熱帯の海を彩る美しいハゼの一種として多くのダイバーやアクアリストに親しまれています。
The Zebra Barred Dartfish (Ptereleotris zebra) reaches about 10 cm in length and is widely distributed from the Red Sea across the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. In Japanese waters, it can be found around Hachijojima, the Ogasawara Islands, and the Ryukyu Archipelago. It inhabits coral and rocky reefs at depths of up to 40 meters, where it feeds primarily on zooplankton and small crustaceans. Individuals may be encountered alone, in pairs, or occasionally in small groups.
One of the species’ most distinctive features is its slender body adorned with a series of vivid pink horizontal stripes. Combined with its elongated dorsal and caudal fins, these markings give the fish a remarkably elegant appearance. The zebra-like pattern is the origin of both its English and Japanese names. Its pale yellow to bluish-white coloration may appear subtle at first glance, but it possesses a refined beauty that stands out against the colorful backdrop of a coral reef.
The Zebra Barred Dartfish often hovers gracefully above the reef while searching for food. In areas with moderate currents, small groups can sometimes be seen suspended in the water column, facing into the flow. Despite its calm appearance, it is highly vigilant. At the slightest sign of danger, it can vanish instantly into crevices among rocks and corals, making close observation surprisingly difficult.
Its attractive coloration and peaceful temperament have also made it a popular ornamental species in both public aquariums and home marine aquaria. With its graceful movements and delicate striped pattern, the Zebra Barred Dartfish is one of the many small yet captivating fishes that bring life and beauty to tropical coral reefs.
