メコン川を遡る巨魚
A Giant Fish Ascending the Mekong
東南アジアのメコン川とその支流に生息する大型のコイ科魚類で、最大で体長1.5mにも達します。金色に輝く体と黒い縦帯が特徴で、観賞魚の世界ではタイガーバルブの名で知られています。なお、一般に「タイガーバルブ」と呼ばれる小型熱帯魚のスマトラ（Puntigrus tetrazona）とは別種で、本種はメコン川流域を代表する大型淡水魚のひとつです。
タイガーバルブは河川に暮らす淡水魚ですが、長距離を移動する回遊性を持っています。乾季になると下流域から上流へ移動して産卵を行い、その生活史はメコン川の自然な流れと密接に結び付いています。しかし近年はダム建設による河川の分断が進み、産卵場への移動が妨げられることが懸念されています。
また、産卵期の雌は卵を多く抱えるため市場で高値で取引されることがあり、繁殖期を狙った漁獲が長年続けられてきました。こうした過剰な捕獲に加え、生息環境の悪化や回遊経路の遮断によって個体数は大きく減少しています。
現在、タイガーバルブ（Probarbus jullieni）は国際自然保護連合（IUCN）のレッドリストで「深刻な危機（CR）」に分類され、ワシントン条約（CITES）によって国際取引も規制されています。一方で、近縁種であるカンボジアンタイガーバルブ（Thicklip barb、Probarbus labeamajor）は別種として流通しており、名前や外見の類似から混同されることがあります。
タイガーバルブは、メコン川の生物多様性保全を象徴する「フラッグシップ種」のひとつとして位置付けられています。最大1.5mに達する巨大な体と長距離の回遊能力を持つ本種の存在は、健全な河川生態系が維持されていることの指標でもあります。その存続は一種の魚だけの問題ではなく、メコン川流域全体の自然環境の未来と深く結び付いています。
The Tiger Barb, Probarbus jullieni, is a large cyprinid fish inhabiting the Mekong River and its tributaries in Southeast Asia. Reaching up to 1.5 meters in length, it is distinguished by its golden body and dark vertical bars. In the aquarium trade, it is commonly known as the Tiger Barb. However, it should not be confused with the much smaller Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona), a popular tropical aquarium fish. P. jullieni is one of the most iconic large freshwater fishes of the Mekong basin.
Although it is a freshwater species, the Tiger Barb is migratory. During the dry season, it moves upstream to spawn, and its life cycle is closely tied to the natural flow of the Mekong River. In recent decades, however, dam construction has fragmented river systems, raising concerns that spawning grounds may become inaccessible.
The species has also suffered from intensive fishing pressure. Females carrying large quantities of eggs are particularly valuable in local markets, leading fishermen to target them during the breeding season. Combined with habitat degradation and the disruption of migratory routes, this overexploitation has caused severe population declines.
Today, the Tiger Barb (Probarbus jullieni) is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, and international trade is regulated under CITES. A closely related species, the Cambodian Tiger Barb or Thicklip Barb (Probarbus labeamajor), is also found within the Mekong system. Because the two species share a similar appearance and are often referred to by similar common names, they are sometimes confused with one another.
The Tiger Barb is regarded as one of the flagship species for biodiversity conservation in the Mekong River. Its impressive size and long-distance migratory behavior serve as indicators of a healthy river ecosystem. The survival of this remarkable fish is not merely a matter of preserving a single species; it is closely linked to the future of the entire Mekong River ecosystem.
