体長8cm。1976年に新種として記載されたハナゴイの一種です。英名で「Queen tiger」とも呼ばれます。
ピンク色の体色に尾びれから背びれにかけて約5本の短い朱赤の横縞が入ります。アサヒハナゴイも同じような横縞が入りますが、アカボシハナゴイの尾びれに近い縞は縦向きになっていることで区別できます。
ここで縞模様の縦横が逆ではないかと思われるかもしれません。実は動物学上での縞模様は、体の軸（背骨）を基準にして、縦か横か決められており、一般的に縦縞と思うものが、横縞となります。ですので魚に限らず哺乳類のシマウマやトラも横縞ということになります。
It’s 8cm long and is a type of anthias carp that was described as a new species in 1976. It’s also known in English as the “Queen tiger.”
Its pink body has about five short, vermilion horizontal stripes running from its tail to its dorsal fin. The Asahi anthias carp also has similar horizontal stripes, but the red-spotted anthias carp can be distinguished by the vertical stripes near its tail.
You might be wondering if the stripes here are reversed. In zoology, stripes are determined as either vertical or horizontal based on the axis of the body (the spine), and what we generally think of as vertical stripes are actually horizontal stripes. This means that not only fish but also mammals like zebras and tigers have horizontal stripes.
