Birds That Announce the Arrival of the Rainy Season

体長は約27cmで、森や林に棲むカワセミの仲間です。東アジアから東南アジアにかけて広く分布しています。性的二形性はほとんどありませんが、オスよりもメスのの羽色がやや明るい傾向にあります。亜種であるリュウキュウアカショウビンは上面の紫色光沢が強くなります。

繁殖のために春から夏にかけて日本に渡来しますが、中でも西表島は日本有数の繁殖地です。梅雨時に雨が降りそうになると「キョロロロ・・・」と鳴くことから「雨を呼ぶ鳥」とも呼ばれています。越冬地は主にインドネシアのボルネオ島で、越冬の間は鳴くことはありません。

アカショウビンは漢字で「赤翡翠」と書きます。「翡翠（しょうびん）」はカワセミ（Common kingfisher）の別名であり、翡翠のような緑色の体色から名付けられました。ちなみにアカショウビンの英名は「Ruddy kingfisher」で背中部分が赤いルビー色に染まることから名付けられています。何れも宝石のような体色の美しさが特徴です。

This species of kingfisher, measuring approximately 27 cm in length, lives in forests and woodlands. It is widely distributed throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia. While there is little sexual dimorphism, females tend to have slightly brighter plumage than males. A subspecies, the Ryukyu kingfisher, has a stronger purple sheen on its uppersides.

They migrate to Japan from spring to summer to breed, with Iriomote Island being one of Japan’s leading breeding grounds. They are also known as the “bird that calls rain” because of their “kyorororo…” call when rain threatens during the rainy season. They primarily winter on the Indonesian island of Borneo, where they do not sing during winter.

The kanji for ‘kashoubin’ (meaning “red kingfisher”) is “red jade.” “Jade” is another name for the common kingfisher, named for its jade-green body color. Incidentally, the ‘kashoubin’ (meaning “ruddy kingfisher”) is the English name for the species, “ruddy kingfisher,” named for the ruby-red color of its back. Both species are characterized by their beautiful jewel-like body colors.
