Calumma parsonii (Cuvier, 1824)

The King of Chameleons

The Parson’s chameleon is endemic to Madagascar. It grows to about 45–60 cm in total length, with exceptional individuals reaching around 68 cm. It is among the largest and heaviest chameleons in the world, and its imposing appearance has earned it the nickname “the king of chameleons.” It has a large, helmet-like crest on its head, while males also develop prominent projections extending toward the tip of the snout.

About 230 species of chameleons are currently known, and approximately 43% of them occur in Madagascar. A remarkable diversity of chameleons has evolved there, particularly in forest habitats, and the Parson’s chameleon is one of them. Taxonomically, chameleons belong to the iguanian group of lizards. They possess numerous adaptations for life in the trees, including specialized feet and a prehensile tail for gripping branches, independently movable eyes, and a long tongue that can be rapidly projected according to the distance to prey. When it spots an insect or other small prey, it can remain almost motionless while carefully taking aim before shooting out its tongue to capture it.

Chameleons are often thought to change color simply to match their surroundings, but their color changes serve several functions. Coloration can be used for communication, including displays of aggression and courtship, as well as for thermoregulation. When basking, a chameleon may become darker to absorb more heat, while lighter coloration can help reduce heat absorption when its body becomes too warm. The precise functions vary among species, and camouflage can also play a role in some situations. The ability to change color is therefore not merely a way of blending into the background, but a versatile adaptation that helps chameleons survive in their environment.
