A Majestic Transformation of an Angelfish

体長は約30cmです。西太平洋の熱帯域に分布し、ラグーンやサンゴ礁の水路、外洋に面した斜面など、サンゴが豊富に発達した環境に生息しています。岩陰や割れ目など隠れ場所の多い場所を好み、通常は単独またはペアで行動します。他の大型エンゼルフィッシュと比べると性質は比較的温和で、落ち着いた振る舞いが印象的です。

本種の大きな特徴は、成長に伴う劇的な体色変化です。幼魚は濃い青色を基調に白い曲線状の模様を持ち、成魚とはまったく異なる外見をしていますが、成長とともに黄色と青が織りなす華やかな配色へと変化します。その変化は比較的急激に進み、中間的な色彩はあまり目立ちません。

成魚の体色は、体の中央部に黄色地と青色斑が広がり、尾びれと背びれは鮮やかな黄色、顔周辺や尾柄部、腹部にはネオンブルーで縁取られた濃紺色が見られます。この強いコントラストと落ち着いた佇まいは、単なる派手さを超えた気品と威厳を感じさせます。英名の「Majestic」は「壮麗な」「威厳ある」を意味し、その名の通りの存在感を備えた魚といえるでしょう。観賞魚として高い人気を持ち、サンゴ礁の景観に風格を添える存在としても知られています。

This species reaches approximately 30 cm in length. It is distributed across the tropical western Pacific, inhabiting coral-rich environments such as lagoons, reef channels, and outer reef slopes. It prefers areas with abundant hiding places among rocks and crevices, and is usually found alone or in pairs. Compared to other large angelfishes, it has a relatively gentle temperament, and its calm behavior is notable.

One of the most striking features of this species is its dramatic change in coloration as it matures. Juveniles are predominantly deep blue with curved white markings, bearing an appearance entirely different from that of adults. As they grow, however, they transform into a vivid pattern of yellow and blue. This transition occurs relatively rapidly, and intermediate coloration is not especially conspicuous.

In adults, the central portion of the body displays a yellow base overlaid with blue markings, while the dorsal and caudal fins are bright yellow. Around the face, caudal peduncle, and ventral area, deep blue edged with neon blue creates a bold contrast. This strong coloration, combined with its composed demeanor, conveys not just brilliance but also a sense of elegance and dignity. The English name “Majestic,” meaning “grand” or “stately,” aptly reflects this impression. Highly valued in the aquarium trade, the species is also known as a fish that adds a sense of grandeur to coral reef landscapes.
