A Silver Mirror with a Cliff-Shaped Head
全長約40cm。大西洋の沿岸域や内湾、河口周辺に生息するアジ科の魚です。日本でよく知られるマアジやカンパチとは大きく姿が異なりますが、同じアジの仲間に分類されます。体は著しく側方に平たく、背びれと尻びれが高く伸びる独特な体形をしており、水中では薄い金属板が漂っているかのようにも見えます。
本種を最も特徴づけるのは、鋭角に切り取られたような前頭部です。額から口先にかけて急角度で傾斜しており、正面から見ると相手を見下ろしているような印象を与えます。この特徴的な顔つきから、英名では「Lookdown（見下ろすもの）」と呼ばれています。また、幼魚は背びれや腹びれの軟条が長く伸びるため、成魚とは異なる優雅な姿を見せます。
和名の由来にもなっている銀白色の体色も大きな魅力です。体表は磨き上げた鏡のような光沢を持ち、光を受けると強く輝きます。一般にアジ類は「光り物」として知られますが、シロガネアジの輝きはその中でも特に際立っています。
この銀色は体表に含まれるグアニン結晶によって生み出されています。グアニン結晶は光を効率よく反射し、周囲の環境に溶け込む役割を果たします。さらに反射の度合いを変化させることで、海面から差し込む光や周囲の明るさに応じて姿を目立ちにくくすることができます。美しい外見は観賞魚としての魅力であると同時に、外敵から身を守るために進化した巧みなカモフラージュでもあるのです。
Reaching about 40 cm in length, the Lookdown inhabits coastal waters, bays, and estuaries of the Atlantic Ocean. Although its appearance differs greatly from that of familiar jacks such as horse mackerels and amberjacks, it belongs to the family Carangidae. Its body is extremely laterally compressed, with elongated dorsal and anal fins, giving it the appearance of a thin sheet of metal drifting through the water.
The species is best known for its sharply angled forehead. The steep slope from the forehead to the snout creates the impression that the fish is looking down on an observer when viewed head-on. This distinctive facial profile is thought to be the origin of its English name, “Lookdown.” Juveniles are especially striking, possessing long fin filaments that give them a graceful appearance quite different from that of adults.
Its brilliant silvery coloration, reflected in the Japanese name “Shirogane-aji” (“silver jack”), is another remarkable feature. The body surface shines like a polished mirror, flashing intensely when illuminated. While many jack species are known for their metallic sheen, the Lookdown’s reflective surface is among the most spectacular.
This silver coloration is produced by guanine crystals embedded within the skin. These crystals efficiently reflect light and help the fish blend into its surroundings. By adjusting the intensity of reflected light according to environmental conditions, the fish can reduce its visibility against the constantly changing underwater background. Thus, its dazzling appearance is not only beautiful but also serves as an effective form of camouflage that helps protect it from predators.
