絶壁の頭を持つ鏡のような魚

全長約40cm。大西洋に生息します。体型は全く違いますが、アジの仲間です。真っ直ぐと鋭角に切り取られたかのような前頭部が特徴で、正面から顔を見ると、まるで見下ろしているように見えることから「Lookdown (ルックダウン)」の英名がつけられてたと考えられます。
また和名が示すように銀色に輝く体色も一際目立っています。アジは寿司で光り物と呼ばれますが、シロガネアジはまるで鏡のようです。銀色はグアニン色素によるもので色素により光沢のある体になりますが、水中でカモフラージュするのに最適な方法に応じて、光を強く反射したり、光を弱めたりすることができます。
It is approximately 40cm long and lives in the Atlantic Ocean. Although its body shape is completely different, it is a member of the the carangidae family. Its distinctive feature is its forehead, which appears to be cut straight and at a sharp angle. When viewed from the front, it appears as if it is looking down, which is thought to be why it was given the English name “Lookdown.”
And as its Japanese name suggests, its shiny silver body color is particularly eye-catching. Horse mackerel is known as a shining fish in sushi, but the lookdown is almost like a mirror. The silver color is due to the guanine pigment, which gives it a lustrous body, but it can also reflect or dim light depending on how best to camouflage itself in the water.
