体長55 – 70cm、翼開長約180cm、体重2 – 3kg。サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカに生息します。日中のほとんどを空中で過ごし、長距離の低空飛行が得意で1日に300km以上飛ぶとも言われています。鋭い爪でネズミなどの小さな哺乳類や小鳥、ヘビやトカゲ等の小型の爬虫類や昆虫等を捕食します。

寸胴で顔が赤いことから達磨の和名がつけられました。英名のBateleurはフランス語で「綱渡り師」の意味で、左右のバランスをとりながら高速で滑空する様子から名付けられました。動物園で翼を広げる姿を見るのは稀ですが、翼の内側は白くなっており、尾羽はとても短いのが特徴です。

生息地の一つであるジンバブエ共和国の国章は、グレートジンバブエ遺跡で発見された彫刻「ジンバブエ鳥」が描かれています。この鳥は王権の象徴であり、統治者の祖先を表しているそうです。さて、この鳥は諸説ありますがダルマワシでではないかと言われています。大空を舞う姿は、彼の地の統治者にふさわしい存在です。

It has a body length of 55-70cm, a wingspan of about 180cm, and weighs 2-3kg. It lives in sub-Saharan Africa. It spends most of the day in the air, and is good at long-distance low-altitude flying, and is said to fly more than 300km a day. It preys on small mammals such as mice, small birds, small reptiles such as snakes and lizards, and insects with its sharp claws.

It was given the Japanese name Daruma because of its cylindrical body and red face. Its English name, Bateleur, means “tightrope walker” in French, and was named after the way it glides at high speed while balancing left and right. It is rare to see it with its wings spread in the zoo, but it has white insides and very short tail feathers.

The national emblem of the Republic of Zimbabwe, one of its habitats, features a sculpture of the “Zimbabwe Bird” discovered at the Great Zimbabwe ruins. This bird is a symbol of kingship and represents the ancestors of the ruler. There are various theories about the identity of this bird, but it is believed to be a bateleur eagle. Its appearance soaring through the sky is fitting for the ruler of that land.
