The Golden Bovine with a Powerful Odor

ゴールデンターキンは、ウシ科に属する大型哺乳類ターキンの4亜種のうちの1つです。体長は1.7〜2.2m、体高は1〜1.3mに達し、オスは最大350kg、メスでも280kgほどになる力強い動物です。ターキンの仲間は中国やミャンマー、インド、ブータンの山岳地帯に広く分布していますが、本亜種は中国陝西省南部の秦嶺（チンリン）山脈周辺にのみ生息する固有亜種として知られています。

最大の特徴は、成獣のオスで特に目立つ金白色の体毛です。黒く太い角との対比が美しく、霧深い山岳森林の中では神秘的な姿を見せます。標高2,000〜3,000mの急峻な森林地帯に暮らし、草や木の葉、タケノコなどを食べています。群れは通常、1頭のオスと複数のメス、子どもからなる小規模な集団で行動し、険しい岩場でも巧みに移動します。

ゴールデンターキンは独特の強いにおいを持つことでも知られています。体には目立った分泌腺がありませんが、全身から油状の分泌物を出し、これが強烈な臭気を放ちます。この油分は、霧や雨の多い高山環境で体毛が濡れるのを防ぐ役割を果たすと考えられています。また、木や岩に体をこすりつけてにおいを残すことで、縄張りや仲間への情報伝達にも利用しているとみられています。

近年は森林開発や道路建設による生息地の分断が問題となっており、中国ではジャイアントパンダと並ぶ国家一級重点保護野生動物に指定されています。黄金色の毛並みを持つこの珍しい動物は、中国山岳地帯の豊かな自然を象徴する存在のひとつとなっています。

The golden takin is one of the four subspecies of takin, a large mammal belonging to the bovine family. It measures 1.7–2.2 meters in body length and 1–1.3 meters in shoulder height. Males can weigh up to 350 kilograms, while females may reach 280 kilograms. Takin are generally distributed across the mountainous regions of China, Myanmar, India, and Bhutan, but the golden takin is restricted to the Qinling Mountains of Shaanxi Province in China.

Its most distinctive feature is its pale golden-white coat, especially striking in adult males. The contrast between the bright fur and the thick black horns gives the animal a mysterious appearance in the misty mountain forests where it lives. Golden takins inhabit steep forested slopes at elevations of 2,000–3,000 meters and feed on grasses, leaves, bamboo shoots, and other vegetation. They usually move in small groups consisting of females and young, sometimes accompanied by a dominant male, and are well adapted to rugged rocky terrain.

Golden takins are also known for their strong odor. Although they lack prominent scent glands, they secrete oily substances from their bodies that produce a powerful smell. This oil is thought to help repel moisture in the foggy and rainy highland environment. The animals also rub the secretion onto trees and rocks, likely using the scent as a form of territorial marking and communication.

In recent years, habitat fragmentation caused by forest development and road construction has become a concern. In China, the golden takin is designated as a First-Class National Protected Wild Animal alongside the giant panda. With its remarkable golden coat, this rare animal is regarded as one of the symbolic creatures of China’s mountain wilderness.
