全長は約10cmに達する小型のテンジクダイの仲間です。本州中部以南の沿岸域をはじめ、台湾やフィリピンなど北西太平洋の温帯から熱帯域にかけて広く分布し、岩礁域や内湾のやや浅い海に生息します。昼間は岩陰や海藻の間に群れで身を潜め、薄暗い環境を好む傾向があり、夜間になると活発に遊泳して小型の甲殻類や動物プランクトンを捕食します。

体色は淡い赤みを帯びた半透明の色合いで、頭部には眼を通る明瞭な黒色の縦帯が入ります。さらに後頭部に黒色斑が見られる点が大きな特徴で、よく似たネンブツダイとの識別点となります。この後頭部の黒斑が和名「クロホシ」の由来です。体はやや側扁し、口が大きく前方に突き出す形状は、夜間に餌を効率よく捕らえるのに適しています。

テンジクダイ科の魚類は世界で350種以上が知られ、その多くが夜行性であるほか、繁殖行動にも特徴があります。多くの種で、産卵後にオスが受精卵を口内に取り込み、孵化するまで保護する「口内保育（マウスブルーディング）」を行います。本種でも同様の繁殖様式が確認されており、卵や仔魚を捕食者から守るための重要な戦略と考えられています。

また、テンジクダイ類は比較的おとなしい性質と美しい体色から観賞魚として利用されることも多く、本種もその一つです。淡い赤色の体色は水中で柔らかく映え、群れで泳ぐ姿は観賞価値が高いとされています。一方で釣りの対象としては小型であるため外道扱いされることもありますが、その見た目から「キンギョ」と呼ばれるなど、親しまれている魚でもあります。

This small cardinalfish reaches a total length of about 10 cm. It is widely distributed in the northwestern Pacific, from central Honshu in Japan southward to Taiwan and the Philippines, inhabiting temperate to tropical coastal waters. It is commonly found in shallow rocky reefs and sheltered bays. During the day, it tends to remain hidden in groups among crevices or seaweed in dim environments, becoming more active at night when it swims out to feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton.

The body is pale with a slight reddish tint and somewhat translucent. A distinct black vertical stripe runs through the eye, and a characteristic black spot is present on the nape. This spot serves as a key feature distinguishing it from the similar Ostorhinchus semilineatus (Nenbutsudai). The Japanese name “Kurohoshi” (meaning “black spot”) is derived from this marking. Its laterally compressed body and relatively large, forward-pointing mouth are well adapted for efficiently capturing prey in low-light conditions.

More than 350 species are known in the cardinalfish family, most of which are nocturnal. They are also notable for their reproductive behavior: in many species, males take fertilized eggs into their mouths and protect them until hatching, a strategy known as mouthbrooding. This species exhibits the same behavior, which is considered an effective adaptation to protect eggs and larvae from predators.

Cardinalfishes are popular in the aquarium trade due to their gentle nature and attractive coloration, and this species is no exception. Its soft reddish hue appears especially सुंदर underwater, and schools of these fish are visually appealing. Although often regarded as bycatch by anglers due to its small size, it is affectionately called “kingyo” (goldfish) because of its appearance and remains a familiar presence in coastal waters.
