地域差によって分類が進むキチヌ

体長は最大で45cm前後に達するタイ科の魚で、インド西太平洋の温帯から亜熱帯域に広く分布しています。日本では千葉県以南の太平洋側および日本海側の沿岸、瀬戸内海から九州にかけて見られ、内湾や河口、干潟などの汽水域を中心に生息しています。クロダイ（チヌ）とよく似ていますが、本種は体色がやや銀白色で体高が高く、腹ビレ・臀ビレ・尾ビレ下部が黄色を帯びる点が特徴です。
外見上の確実な識別点としては、背ビレ基部から側線までの鱗数が挙げられ、本種は約3.5列、クロダイは5.5列以上と明瞭な差があります。また口はやや前方に突き出し、底生生物をついばむのに適した形状をしています。食性は雑食性で、貝類や甲殻類、多毛類のほか藻類なども摂取し、浅海域の生態系において重要な役割を担っています。
とくに汽水域への適応力が高く、河川への遡上能力にも優れています。高知県の四万十川では河口から約50km上流まで遡上する例が知られており、塩分変化への耐性の高さがうかがえます。産卵期は主に春から初夏で、内湾の浅場などで産卵が行われます。
かつては広域に分布する単一種と考えられていましたが、近年の研究により地域ごとに別種とされる例が増えています。例えば沖縄周辺の個体群はオキナワキチヌ（Acanthopagrus chinshira）、オーストラリア周辺のものはオーストラリアキチヌ（Acanthopagrus australis）として区別されており、分類の再検討が進められています。日本では釣りの対象魚として親しまれ、地域によっては食用としても利用されています。
A sparid fish reaching up to about 45 cm in length, this species is widely distributed across temperate to subtropical regions of the Indo–West Pacific. In Japan, it occurs from Chiba Prefecture southward along both the Pacific and Sea of Japan coasts, including the Seto Inland Sea and Kyushu. It is commonly found in inner bays, estuaries, tidal flats, and other brackish environments. Although it closely resembles the black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), it can be distinguished by its slightly paler silvery body, deeper profile, and the yellow coloration on the pelvic fins, anal fin, and lower lobe of the caudal fin.
A reliable diagnostic feature is the number of scale rows between the base of the dorsal fin and the lateral line: approximately 3.5 in this species, compared to 5.5 or more in the black seabream. The mouth is slightly protrusible, adapted for picking benthic prey. It is omnivorous, feeding on mollusks, crustaceans, polychaete worms, and algae, and plays an important ecological role in shallow coastal habitats.
This species shows a strong tolerance for brackish conditions and is capable of migrating far upstream into rivers. In the Shimanto River of Kochi Prefecture, individuals have been recorded as far as 50 km upstream from the river mouth, indicating high adaptability to salinity changes. Spawning generally occurs from spring to early summer in shallow coastal waters.
Once considered a single widespread species, recent taxonomic studies have revealed regional differentiation, with some populations now recognized as distinct species. For example, individuals from Okinawa are classified as the Okinawan yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus chinshira), while those from Australia are treated as the yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis). Taxonomic revision within this group is ongoing. In Japan, it is a popular target for recreational fishing and is also consumed locally as a food fish.
