Amethysts Adorning the Coral Reef
The Amethyst Anthias (Pseudanthias pascalus) reaches a maximum length of 20 cm. It is found in tropical waters of the western Pacific and is more commonly encountered around oceanic islands than along continental coasts. Large schools gather along the outer slopes of coral reefs and around caves, feeding on small crustaceans such as copepods, their larvae, and fish eggs. Schools of these vividly colored fish add a splash of purple to the underwater scenery of coral reefs.
The common name “Amethyst Anthias” refers to its vivid purple coloration, reminiscent of the gemstone amethyst. It is also known as the “Purple Queen.” In Okinawa, Japan, it is called “Juriguwa-iyu,” a local name meaning “courtesan.” One of the authors who formally described the species was Shigeho Tanaka, a major contributor to the development of Japanese ichthyology.
Males and females differ in appearance. Males have a more pointed snout and a red dorsal fin. Their pelvic fins and the fin rays of the caudal fin are also elongated, with the upper and lower tips of the caudal fin extending into slender filaments. These features make the red dorsal fin stand out against the fish’s predominantly purple body.
During the breeding season, males spread their dorsal fins conspicuously. This behavior is particularly noticeable when two males pass one another. With their brilliant red dorsal fins fully displayed, they appear to be showing off their presence to each other. Some species of anthias are known to form harems in which a single male breeds with multiple females. The differences in coloration and fin shape between the sexes are not only visually striking but also offer clues to understanding their reproductive behavior.
