スマトラに棲むもうひとつのトラ

全長6〜8cmほど。東南アジアのスマトラ島やボルネオ島を中心とした地域の河川や沼地に生息するコイ科の淡水魚です。黄色から橙色を帯びた体に4本の黒い縦帯が入り、その姿がトラを連想させることから英名 Tiger barb と呼ばれています。日本では「スマトラ」の名で古くから親しまれ、ネオンテトラやグッピーと並ぶ代表的な熱帯魚として知られています。

雑食性で人工飼料にもよく慣れ、丈夫で環境への適応力も高いため、熱帯魚飼育の入門種として人気があります。繁殖も比較的容易で、長年にわたる品種改良によってアルビノやグリーンタイプなどさまざまな改良品種が作出されてきました。

一見するとコイ科らしい丸みのある体形で温和な印象を受けますが、その性格は意外なほど活発です。群れで盛んに泳ぎ回り、ときには他の魚の長いヒレをつついたり、かじったりすることがあります。そのため、ヒレの大きな魚との混泳には注意が必要です。一方で十分な数で飼育すると仲間同士で行動する傾向が強まり、本来の活発な群泳行動を観察できます。

英名の Tiger barb は広く知られていますが、東南アジアには Probarbus jullieni という大型のコイ科魚類がおり、こちらも Cambodian tiger barb（カンボジアンタイガーバルブ）と呼ばれます。同じ「タイガーバルブ」の名を持ちながら、片や手のひらに収まる小魚、片や1mを超える大型魚であり、その姿や生態は大きく異なります。

The Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a small cyprinid fish reaching 6–8 cm in length. It inhabits rivers, swamps, and other freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, particularly around Sumatra and Borneo. Its yellow to orange body is marked by four bold black vertical bands, a pattern that resembles a tiger’s stripes and has earned the species its common English name, “Tiger Barb.” In Japan, it is widely known as “Sumatra” and has long been one of the most popular tropical fish alongside species such as neon tetras and guppies.

The species is omnivorous, readily accepts prepared foods, and adapts well to a variety of aquarium conditions, making it an excellent beginner fish. It is also relatively easy to breed in captivity. Decades of selective breeding have produced numerous color varieties, including albino and green forms, which are now common in the aquarium trade.

Although its rounded body shape gives it a gentle appearance typical of many cyprinids, the Tiger Barb is surprisingly energetic and assertive. It spends much of its time swimming actively in schools and may nip at the elongated fins of other fish. For this reason, care should be taken when housing it with species that possess large or flowing fins. When kept in sufficiently large groups, however, the fish tends to direct its attention toward its own kind, allowing aquarists to observe its natural schooling behavior.

The name “Tiger Barb” is widely recognized, but another Southeast Asian cyprinid, Probarbus jullieni, is also known as the Cambodian Tiger Barb. Despite sharing the word “tiger” in their common names, the two fishes are vastly different. One is a small aquarium fish that fits comfortably in the palm of a hand, while the other can exceed one meter in length and ranks among the giants of Southeast Asian freshwater ecosystems.
