体長約20cm、最大で40cmを超えるフエフキダイ科の魚です。インド洋から中部太平洋にかけて分布し、日本では南日本の太平洋沿岸から琉球列島、小笠原諸島などに見られます。浅い岩礁やサンゴ礁に生息し、昼間は単独または群れで泳ぎ、ときには100尾以上の大きな群れをつくることもあります。夜になると海底近くで餌を探し、カニや巻貝などの底生動物を捕食します。

大きな眼が特徴で、体側には黄色から黄褐色の縦線が並び、背びれの後方には鮮やかな黄色い斑紋があります。さらに、上顎の側面には鋸（のこぎり）のような細かな突起をもつ隆起があり、これが和名の由来とされています。英名の「Striped large-eye bream」も、大きな眼と縞模様という外見的特徴を表した名前です。

魚類では、背びれや臀びれなどを構成する鰭条の数が種類ごとにほぼ決まっており、分類や種の識別に利用されます。鰭条は硬い棘条と柔らかな軟条に分けられ、ノコギリダイでは背びれが10棘10軟条、臀びれが3棘8～10軟条、胸びれが14～15軟条です。こうした特徴を数字と記号で表すと「D X,10；A III,8–10；P1 14–15」となります。外見だけでなく、こうした細かな形態的特徴も魚を見分ける手がかりになります。

The Striped Large-eye Bream is a member of the family Lethrinidae, growing to about 20 cm in length. It is distributed across warm waters from the Indian Ocean to the central Pacific, and in Japan it occurs along the southern Pacific coast, the Ryukyu Islands, and the Ogasawara Islands. It inhabits shallow rocky reefs and coral reefs. During the day, it may be seen alone or in groups, sometimes forming schools of more than 100 individuals. At night, it leaves the group and searches for food near the seafloor, feeding on bottom-dwelling animals such as crabs and gastropods.

Its large eyes are one of its most distinctive features. The body is yellow with white vertical stripes during the day, while the belly is white with brown vertical stripes. At night, its body becomes brownish, making it less conspicuous. Another distinctive feature is a series of small, saw-like projections along the side of the upper jaw, which is the origin of its Japanese name, Nokogiridai, meaning “saw bream.” The English name, Striped Large-eye Bream, also refers to its prominent eyes and striped body.

In fishes, the number of fin rays forming the dorsal, anal, and other fins is generally characteristic of each species and can be useful for identification. Fin rays consist of stiff spines and softer rays. In the Striped Large-eye Bream, the dorsal fin has 10 spines and 10 soft rays, the anal fin has 3 spines and 8–10 soft rays, and the pectoral fin has 14–15 soft rays. These features can be expressed using a standardized fin-ray formula: D X,10; A III,8–10; P1 14–15. Such fine anatomical details, as well as external appearance, provide important clues for distinguishing one fish species from another.
