In which countries are little goats popular?
西アフリカと中央アフリカ原産の世界最小のヤギであり、体長は60 – 70cmで、ペットや動物園で飼育されることの多い品種です。体が小さいのは湿潤な森林の環境への適応として進化したと考えられています。また、「恒温動物において、温帯の種は寒帯の種よりも小型である」というベルクマンの法則（Bergmann, 1847）の妥当性を証明しています。
世界的に認知されるようになったのはカメルーンからスウェーデンとドイツの動物園に渡って展示されたことが始まりです。そこから彼らはイギリス、カナダ、アメリカへと渡り、犬や猫と同様に家族のような存在の「コンパニオンアニマル」として人気を博します。アメリカ合衆国には1959年に導入されて以来、品評会やショーが各地で開催されるなど特にその存在が根付いています。人懐っこく、丈夫で、体色の個体差があり、繁盛力があることが彼らの魅力です。1歳にも満たないうちに性成熟して、繁殖できるようになるのですが、他のヤギに比べてかなり早いと言えます。他には庭に放し飼いすることで成長した草を食べてくれるので、草刈り要らずという利点もあるようです。
Native to West and Central Africa, the goat is the world’s smallest breed, measuring 60-70 cm in length. It is often kept as a pet or kept in zoos. Its small size is thought to have evolved as an adaptation to the humid forest environment. It also supports Bergmann’s rule (1847), which states that “in warm-blooded animals, temperate species are smaller than polar species.”
It first gained global recognition after being brought from Cameroon to zoos in Sweden and Germany and exhibited there. From there, they spread to the UK, Canada, and the US, where they became popular as companion animals, similar to dogs and cats. Since their introduction to the US in 1959, they have become particularly well-established, with many exhibitions and shows held across the country. Their appeal lies in their friendly nature, hardiness, individual variation in body color, and fertility. They reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproduction before they are even one year old, much earlier than other goats. Another advantage of letting them roam freely in the garden is that they will eat the grass that grows, so there is no need to mow the lawn.
