Goura victoria (Fraser, 1844)

絶滅種ドードーとの意外な関係
A surprising connection to the extinct dodo

全長70cm。全身が青灰色で前胸部は赤紫色、そして頭頂部の扇形の冠羽と赤い目が特徴であり、世界で最も美しいハトの一つと言われています。
ニューギニア島北部の低地や沼地の森に生息しており、日中は地上で餌を探し、果物、種子、芽、昆虫、カタツムリなどを食します。夜間は木の上で休み、巣は最大10mもの高さに作られます。一夫一妻制で2 -10羽の家族グループで行動しています。

さてオウギバトにそっくりで混同されがちなのがカンムリバトGoura cristata です。違いは冠羽にあります。体と同じ青灰色1色だけなのがカンムリバト、冠羽の先が扇状で白いのがオウギバトです。これらが属するカンムリバト属には4種存在しており、全てインドネシア、パプアニューギニア近辺に生息、いずれもよく似ています。

これらは現生のハトとして世界最大ですが、約350年前にはさらに大きい体長1mを越すハトが存在していました。実はそれは「不思議の国のアリス」に登場するドードーRaphus cucullatus です。発見されてわずか100年もの間に絶滅してしまいましたが、カンムリバト属はドードーと近縁であることがわかっています。一説によるとドードーの名前は鳴き声が由来であると言われていますが、オウギバトも求愛時に「ボー、ボー」と独特の低い音で鳴くことが知られています。

Total length 70cm. It is said to be one of the most beautiful pigeons in the world, with a blue-gray body, reddish purple prothorax, fan-shaped crest on the top of the head, and red eyes.
They live in the lowlands and swampy forests of the northern part of New Guinea, and during the day they forage on the ground, eating fruits, seeds, buds, insects, snails, etc. At night they rest in trees, building nests up to 10m high. They are monogamous and live in family groups of 2-10 birds.

The Western Crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata) is very similar to the Victoria Crowned Pigeon and is often confused with it. The difference is in the crest. The Western Crowned Pigeon has only the same blue-gray color as the body, while the Victoria Crowned Pigeon has a crest with a fan-shaped white tip. There are four species in the Crowned Pigeon genus, which includes these, and all live near Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and all look very similar.

These are the largest living pigeons in the world, but about 350 years ago, there was an even larger pigeon that was over 1m in length. In fact, this was the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), which appears in “Alice in Wonderland.” It became extinct just 100 years after it was discovered, but it is known that the Crowned Pigeon genus is closely related to the dodo. One theory is that the dodo’s name comes from its cry, and the Victoria Crowned Pigeon is also known to make a unique low-pitched “boo, boo” cry when courting.
